Personally when I think about fighters who took the sport to a new level I think about Randy Couture, Chuck, Hughes, Penn, Rampage, Wand, etc.

Hughes, Penn, Rampage, and Wand are just great fighters who have just been along for the ride. None of them took anything to a new level.

You had Royce Gracie & Ken Shamrock who put it on the map, then you had the dark ages, then you had TUF which made stars out of Chuck & Randy, Tito who broke records with Ken, then you had Brock who took it to another level with the 1M+ buyrates. Those are your primary "took it up a level" fighters. Royce, Ken, Tito, Chuck, Randy, Brock.

You have other people like Gina Carano, Kimbo, maybe Faber on a small scale, and Frank Shamrock in San Jose as a local draw & biggest "dark ages" star who you can make a case for. Maybe one or two other minor players like Tank Abbott who i'm forgetting.

I don't have anything against Lesnar, I think he's an ok guy. Can't fault him for taking advantage of a great opportunity either. I think it was a bad move and a bit hypocritical of Dana to thrust Lesnar into a championship role so soon, instead of allowing him the time necessary to develop as a fighter. What made it worse was how he was trumpeting him as the best HW in the world. The whole situation just made the UFC look a bit amateur in that regard IMO. Your saying that this guy is the best, meanwhile he hasn't learned how to take a punch yet? Not a good look.

Let me remind you that Cain Velasquez paid my mortgage last month (well, all but $30 of it). I don't think anyone who really pays attention thought Brock would win that fight.

The difference, is I'm not overeacting. He has plenty of good wins. He clearly isn't a fraud or a "fake fighter" like these elitists and goofs like Frye and Bigfoot claim. People were waiting for the guy to lose to jump on him, and it ended up taking a lot longer than most of you thought.

I think everyone knows waht Brock is. He's a big, explosive guy who can control smaller guys and maul you if he gets you on the ground. Nobody who seriously follows the sport thought he was the best fighter in the world, but there was a point after Carwin where it was realistic to rank him the top heavyweight, mostly due to lack of anyone else. You said youself, rank isn't about skill. And it isn't.
