Donovan McNabb to retire as an Eagle. HOF worthy?

Donovan McNabb has said he will retire as an Eagle in September. The question: will he be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

yes......why not. lots of QBs can only dream of what he has done.
not his fault that his only WR that could catch was a HB (Westbrook)

Ive thought about this alot since last year. The more you look at it the numbers....the performances .....the reputation...it all leads to the easy answer.

I will say this about McNabb. It took Andy Reid 5 years to figure out how to build an offense around his strengths. From 99-03, McNabb was throwing a lot of slants and WR screens that required timing, accuracy, and receivers who will break tackles and rack up YACs. His strength was never throwing underneath accurately to give a wr the opportunity to make a play, nor did he have a wr that could do that. He spent those first four years making chicken salad out of chicken shit, and I give him credit for being productive with an offensive philosophy that didn't fit him.

In 04 he had arguably one of the best QB years statistically of the decade. They gave him TO and started throwing down the field. I could be wrong, but I think he is the only QB in NFL history to have 30+ TDs and less than 10 Ints that year. If a couple things go his way, he would easily be in the HOF (not breaking his ankle in 02, his overall health in the 2nd half of his career to name a few). But after getting hurt in 05 and 06, Reid should of tried to run the ball more and not put the offense on his shoulders.

However, we don't induct players on what they could have been. While his playoff record is good, it's hard to overlook going 1-4 in NFC championship games when he was favored in all but 1 of them. And his stints in Washington and Minnesota were abysmal.

Greatest QB in Eagles History is like being the nicest guy in prison. It doesn't make you a hall of famer.

He had some things working against him outside of his control, mainly with offensive philosophy IMO. But offensive line was not one of them. Runyan and Tra Thomas were good tackles, Jermaine Mayberry and Todd Herremans were solid at guard. Hank Fraley and Jamal Jackson were serviceable at Center. And Shawn Andrews, who would eventually flake out, did rack up 2 pro bowl appearances and a 1st team all pro before he "checked out".

Just to expand on the assertion he had a "bad" offensive line since Dell also questioned it in the OP, you have to remember he was a mobile QB, especially early in his career. Steve Young took a ton of sacks in his career, and even had a higher career sack% (Young 7.4 with the Niners, 7.9 overall vs McNabb 7.1 ). Did Steve Young have a bad O-Line too?

I think he had Hall of Fame talent but the numbers just aren't. He could have probably made the HoF on a team that knew how to use him earlier in his career.
