Final Fantasy appreciation thread - Come get your nerd on!!1!11

VIII is my favorite because of the love story and sentimental value of characters like Zell and Gilgamesh. I heard the opposite about difficulty. So many people had issues about how tedious the magic drawing and junction system was, which I never really a problem with since I normally would just buy my shit or play the card game.

I refuse to acknowledge FFX-2. That was a blatant money grab. :nope:

It was a slap in the face towards FF fans IMO. So does anyone care to explain why VII is overrated in there opinion or is everyone drinking that kool-aid?

Human nature shows that we love to build something up to greatness and then knock it off it's perch and watch it fall.

Personally I didn't care for FFVII's story, it's hero, it's villain, and the fact that it was the first dip into having to look at crazy hyper-androgynous characters all of the time. FF started to suck for me when they made the jump to 3D, because I loved the look of the sprites much more than the polygonal fags that make up everything post VI. Yeah the sketches were always pretty gay, but at least you didn't have to see those outside of the manual and the menu.

I don't think FFVII is overrated. I think it gets it proper due (though the fanboys/girls are extremely nauseating), but after I played VIII, IX, and X I simply disagree with those who hold VII as the golden standard of what an RPG should be.

This, the last RPG I played was FFXII on the PS2. I didn't make it half way through, shit was horrible.

Kinda like Shogen said, FFVII is good but people stay stuck on it way too much. There has been great Final Fantasy games since 7 but people still go back to 7 when talking about Final Fantasy and fail to appreciate 8 and 10 IMO.

Reason for this is because 7 was the first RPG a lot of people ever played ... it was popular before with certain people but 7 made it mainstream. That's how it was for me - my step dad was playing it, I picked it up and loved it.

I love them all though. No love for FF4? Cecil and Kain are both underrated.

I still haven't played VII. I downloaded it a month or so ago but haven't really had the time for it. How would that game stand up to age? I played through VIII and loved it and I feel like that game aged real well.

But more on topic. IX was my favorite. Can't even really explain why it just had a lot of charm or something

You won't like 7 playing it today as much as you would have if you played it in 98. It's still a good game but back then it was unreal.

edit: Just reading this thread made me start up another playthrough on Tactics. This has to be like the 300th time I've played the game, LOL.

It's actually one of my favroites FF games. One of the few games that would make me pick up a gameboy now.

I liked it, but FF-Tactics on the PSX was the best game of the entire franchise. It wasn't a typical FF, so FFX is considered the best of that chain, but FF-Tactics was absolutely AMAZING.

Of the latest titles, I haven't played X-2, XII, or Tactics, but I really liked IX and X. Unfortunately, I never beat both VIII and IX because the last disc always got fucked up by my brother before I could finish.

Nice when i get my PSP back home we are going to have to play. I tried playing as Tidus and I couldnt get his moves down pat. The whole thing about how his moves are dodges and attacks at the same time always threw me off.

Watched some videos earlier.

A gift and a curse about FF is that they're so long. It makes the game more epic yes, but I've never played one twice because I know how long it takes to beat them.
After looking at the videos I'm tempted to play X again but the 60+ hours I know it's gonna take is intimidating.
