I am pretty confident that the TV series will finish before the books. The one thing that will likely hold it back is that eventually they won't be able to go 1 book/1 season I would think. Even SoS seems like it would be hard to pull off in 1 season, and when you get to DoD, I think it'll be impossible in less than like 17 or 18 episodes.

I'm also curious how they'll handle timelines, because obviously it won't be like the books in that AFfC had very major characters just not even making an appearance. I imagine they will run AFfC and DoD together like the timelines kind of do.

I wouldn't expect the 6th one until at least 2014. He's definitely not in a rush and apparently told his vision for the whole story to the two producers of the TV show in case he dies.

Fullmetal Alchemist. The writers of the TV show weren't nearly as good as the original writer of the manga. You can tell when they passed up the source material and had to take over, because the show started to get stale.
