im with dave, the two most interesting characters from last year got killed off and no one (outside of lil' lanister) has come close to matching their coolness.

exactly! those were great characters. having them die was great for the story but sucked because they were such great roles
 
Truthfully, while I love reading, I don't want to read the books until the TV series plays itself out.
I have no doubt the books are better than the TV show, but I have invested myself in the TV show, so I want to let that play out.

Reminds me of Jurassic Park - the book is 1000x better than the movie, but I saw the movie first. The book didn't ruin the movie, but it changed it.

Well there are at least six more seasons coming, if not more. We already know that the events of third book will span TV seasons 3 and 4. Since the sixth and seventh books have yet to even be written, there's no telling how many seasons HBO will need to finish this massive story off. I could definitely see production of the show extending into the next decade.

Meanwhile I was able to read the first three books in a little over six weeks. When waiting in between all of those seasons, I would think just general curiosity for what the fuck happens next would compel you to read the books, if nothing else.
 
Im the opposite of Dave, I read the Book 1 before watching Season 1. I found it easier to understand some of the smaller things going on that maybe the TV show didnt touch enough base on. The best part about it though, is while the Book gives you great insight into certain characters, the show also touches on characters that dont have chapters in the book.

This is what I was talking about a couple posts ago in regards to the pace of the show:

This is actually a more streamlined hour than some of the previous ones. The series comes up with some incredibly fun ways to adapt portions of the book that might have been a little ponderous if adapted as written. My favorite here is the scene where Tyrion tells Pycelle, Varys, and Littlefinger three different stories, to figure out which of them is leaking information to the queen. (It’s old Pycelle, who gets his beard chopped off for his troubles.) In the books, this was presented in essentially straightforward fashion. You could follow what Tyrion was doing, but the story spent a lot more time setting up the trap than it needed. Here, the episode cuts this all together as one big montage. Tyrion tells Pycelle one thing, then we see the next deception, and then the final one. It’s done in a matter of minutes, and it masterfully shows off Tyrion’s plan with economy and plenty of entertaining moments. It’s just terrific adaptation, and it shows that the series isn’t afraid to take what’s on the page and tweak it just enough to make it more cinematic. (This episode also has a fair amount of embellishment, about which more in the spoilers section.)
