They have to do that because the books don't exactly follow a linear timeline. There's just so much shit going on and all if it matters. Martin has said that he deliberately wrote this series to be too big for the movies, they'll have to scale things down and rearrange events in order to cram it all into 10 episodes every year with each season ending on a banger. Luckily, they have lots of good starting and stopping points to choose from in the books.

Yeah, the Reeds specifically, which I guess they said are going to be in it, but I wonder what the circumstance would be (although with that entire plotline I guess they can really fudge anything give the nature Jojen's "abilities"). It does seem to be working for TV though, so can't argue there.

I was a little concerned midway through this season with how far they were veering from the book story, but they've managed to get things back on the road in recent weeks. I think they are doing a great job, all things considered, and the added characters in s3 will allow them to flesh things out even more.
Agreed. It's amazing, honestly, that they've pulled it off this well, even for HBO. I spent like 3 hours in the SOIAF wiki the other day, and as if I didn't already know this after reading all 5 books but...this shit is DENSE. There are VERY detailed pages on the history of characters that are only mentioned briefly at times. It's insane.
I think it also speaks to how well they've pulled this off that I know multiple females that love the show, have only seen the show, and don't even have 100% of a grasp on certain character's NAMES. It's a very well done series that probably won't get the credit it deserves by some reviewers because it is in the "fantasy" genre.

It's too much for even GRRM to keep track with at times. Apparently he has a 50 or so page document with character notes and backstory, but even with that he still gets minor details wrong sometimes. He says he's been corrected by fans over changing a minor character's eye-color and shit like that.

I read book 1 after watching season 1 and agree that it helped me understand the show better by giving me more details on the characters. In the middle of book 2 now and I'm sure I'll finish books 3 and 4 by the time next season starts.
That's still no excuse since this is the third appearance in the series. The very first scene in the pilot was an Other (or White Walker), then in the middle of the first season a wight (zombie) came and attacked the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, only to be saved by Jon Snow. You have no basis to critique a show that you can't even keep up with.

i didnt think the finale was nearly as good as the episode prior to it with the huge battle in kings landing. it was a good finale but didnt knock my socks off like i expected it would. i agree with mgoblue that everything just felt rushed to get all the storylines to close the season with a nice little bow on them.

It's easy to just join the gang and pile on. I doubt I'm the only GOT fan who thought season 2 was a disappointment. But, again, I am speaking as a GOT fan who has only watched the TV show.
That is what I felt as well. After a huge battle (the "oh fuck me" line hand me loling) I felt the finale was more of just a lot of set up stuff. Kahlessi didn't even show up till like halfway through the thing and she was a major storyline. The ending with the white walkers was cool and all, but I think it just missed that "OH HELLZ NAH!" ending I kind of expected after the show before.

Most HBO shows climax on the next to last episode. The last episode on most HBO shows is for clean up and lead in for next season. Showtime shows do this too.
