Microsoft has revealed that Gears of War 3 sold over three million copies during its first week in stores.
In a new blog post, Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb (Major Nelson) announced the achievement.
"Following more than 22,000 midnight madness launch events, Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive sold more than three million copies in its first week since release," Hryb wrote.
This makes Gears of War 3 the biggest game of 2011, and also means that the Gears of War franchise has earned over one billion dollars in lifetime sales.
"In just one week, Gears 3 has already grossed more than any 2011 video game to date," Hryb added.
By comparison, Gears of War 2 sold two million copies in its first weekend.

GEARS 3 DLC Nov 1st
Today Microsoft and Epic Games announced that Gears of War 3 is about to get even bigger with the Horde Command Pack game add-on, launching Nov. 1. The add-on pack adds three maps to the game's Horde and Beast mode (Blood Drive, Rustlung and Asura), three new characters (Onyx guard, Big Rig Dizzy and Bernie), two new weapon skins (Team Plasma and Jungle Camo). The new maps will also be playable in private Versus mode.
Hryb also confirmed the following new fortification upgrades: •Command Center - A brand new type of fortification that allows you to call in fire support from sniper teams, mortar strikes and even multiple Hammers of Dawn
•Decoy Upgrade - A new fortification level that turns your decoy into an Onyx Guard bot that will fight in your defense
•Sentry Upgrade - This upgrade adds a fire bolt sentry that deals much more damage and is very effective against Berserkers
•Silverback Upgrade - This advancement allows you to upgrade your Silverback exo-suit with devastating rockets and extra levels of repair cost reduction
The add-on is available for 800 Microsoft points or for automatic download for consumers who have purchased the Gears of War 3 Season Pass.
