[ALL] If a friend/relative asked your advice on which console to buy?

I've wanted to make this thread for a while but didn't want to start another console war thread. Personally I've had to deal with this question a ton the past few months. I'm pretty sure that most everyone hear knows my answer as I've reiterated it many times but I'd like to see what others think.

Whether you love your 360/PS3/Wii more, honestly, if a friend/co-worker/relative asked for your opinion on what console to buy, what would you tell them? And let's assume that these people are all average gamers and that they can only afford ONE.

Like I've said, I've given my advise to more than a handful of my friends, relatives and co-workers over the past few months. When it comes down to it I tell them that if they are buying one console that they can't go wrong with the PS3. Bluray included. Free online. Netflix. Built-in wireless (yes I know the new Xbox finally has it). Rechargebale controllers out of the box. And something else that seems to be vastly overlooked, online purchases. Would you rather tell your dad that he can just enter his credit card information ONCE on his PS3 and thus make purchases from PSN, games, movies or otherwise, or would they rather buy points that are not equivalent to actual dollars. I know I for one would be on the phone with my dad every other day being asked "So I want to download this movie. 240 points is how much?"

The bottom line is that when I give advice on a console I don't even hesitate. What would you tell your "loved ones" to buy?

Now I'm guessing most people will stick to their usual "360 rulez!", "PS3 ownzerz!" "The Wii roxerz!", but if you really sat down and thought about it, knowing that these people are putting their hard earned dollars on the line, what would you tell them?

It all depends on that person really, I'd tell them what's best for what they want.

I know what all the consoles are capable of and what kind of entertainment you're going to get, so I'd just tell people (if they asked) what's best for them.


I suppose you are looking for people who give honest answers vs people who just give a fanboi answer?

I mean, I don't see why anyone would do this differently. If someone asks your advice on buying something...anything, you would tell them what's best for them, gaming consoles included, no?

Anyone who tell someone to buy something that they are a fanboi over but really isn't best for them is a faggot douchefuck IMO. That's just fucking dumb to do something like that.

it depends on the age really id recommend a 360 for younger people because thats what their friends probably have and a ps3 for adults who are more likely to have a hdtv to take advantage of bluray and enjoy the more adult oriented online community.

working at gamestop, i usually found that 360 is the system that is best for more people, if the person has to ask me which console they should get, ps3 usually isnt for them.

Probably a PS3, for all the reasons Twigg mentioned.

Bluray included. Free online. Netflix. Built-in wireless (yes I know the new Xbox finally has it). Rechargebale controllers out of the box. And something else that seems to be vastly overlooked, online purchases.

It's probably more casual friendly than the 360, if you're not a total tech illiterate. It's a much better media hub if you wish for your console to be that in your home(although I've heard Netflix is better on 360). And it's the "free" console, if you know what I mean.

Not to mention, even with the slim now available, theres that fear of your console "breaking" with the 360 that you cant go without mentioning if you're recommending it.

the ps3 really depends on 2 things if you really do care about blue-ray and the type of gamer you are if the dude commenting really likes to only play single-player games and doesn't really go online all that much the ps3 is their kind of system

on the opposite end

the 360 is the superior online hub for online gaming (imo of course) with everything a click away regarding the red ring luckily its only happened 3 times to me 1 of those being an error by Microsoft sending me a console already broken (gave me a 3 month trial and overnighted my console to me) **usually if you can buy a console you can afford 60 a year in regards to the membership fee for xbox live + with espn coming to xblive it should be well worth it

with the wii I have only recommended it to 1 person (my uncle) who has 2 young kids and I told him if he wasn't really going to use it that the wii would provide better entertainment, games, as well as the ability for the both of my cousins to play together more so than with a 360 or ps3

actually it is a lot easier to have your 360 act as your media center b/c due to it being linked to microsoft it acts really well with your pc (In my experience all I had to do was go to the media center type in the digits on the 360 screen and I was good to go) with the ps3 I needed a program as it wouldn't like to acknowledge my cpu

although the ps3 handles a lot more video file formats

I voted for PS3 on personal preference but completely understand that the 360 is a better choice for a lot of people out there.

I do think age is a big factor. For a kid I'd probably suggest a 360 as well. But for a mature adult, which in my case are the only people asking for my advice these days, it's always PS3.

The PS3 is a much better entertainment system IMO. I can copy my entire music library from my external hard drive and store it on the PS3, I can store my favorite shows/movies on it, and it has an easily upgradable hard drive.

The online is superior to PS3, and $60/year isn't a reason to shy away from a much better online network. The Blu-Ray player really shouldn't appeal to many people. The quality isn't enough to pay $30+ for a movie, unless they use torrents to download Blu-Ray movies. 360 is the much more popular system and has the more popular exclusives.

I've had mine set up for that for over a year now. You can also network it to several PC's very easily. I have mine networked to a terabyte external HD and that holds about 6000 songs, 300 movies, and 60 tv series.

You were actually making decent sense, although I can easily argue that the "average" person doesn't know much about online gaming, let alone paying for it. Trying to explain to someone like my dad how to connect his PS3 online (which is simple as pie, all you read is the on screen prompts) and then trying to explain to him how he also needs to wither enter in his credit card or buy a subscription card are two entirely different beasts.

But you completely lost it with the bolded part. First of all TONS of people ONLY care about bluray. And you are fucking insane if you think it's a negligible difference. Maybe if you're playing on a standard def tv. And don't if get me started on the audio. It's not even a contest. I'm not sure when the last time you shopped for blurays but most are around $20 now and there are tons that are $10.

More exclusives on 360? Keep dreaming. Just check wikipedia son. PS3 has quite a few more to this point and more expected.

And another thing I forgot that the PS3 has and 360 doesn't is an internet browser. The average consumer loves being able to surf the 'net on their big screen.

You mean the dashboard? The dashboard is pretty sweet with the exception of the tons of ads.

The PS3 XMB is not nearly as sleek but I'll take hardly any ads and being able to customize my XMB with FREE (and not PREMIUM pay for themes on 360) themes from ps3-themes.com. Right now I'm rocking a sweet as Red Dead one.
