CHARLESTON, SC (AP)- Drew Henson threw for 307 yards and a touchdown and Emmitt Smith added 112 yard rushing and a score in the Cardinals 27-14 win over the Panthers. The Arizona defense let Stephen Davis go over the century mark in rushing yards, the third time they've left the opposing runningback do that. However, the secondary was strong like usual, holding Jake Delhomme to under 150 yards passing. Delhomme completed less than half his passes and threw two interceptions, including one to Mike Rumph which was returned for a touchdown.
Henson led the Cardinals on an opening drive of nine plays before Neil Rackers kicked a 46 yard field goal to give Arizona an early lead. A three and out gave the ball right back to Henson and the offense, where they went on another long drive. Henson first hit Anquan Boldin for 37 yards, then hit Larry Fitzgerald for 19 yards. Emmitt Smith carried the ball two yards, but then Henson was sacked by Mike Rucker. He shook the dirt off and hit Bryant Johnson on a fade route for a 17 yard score. Carolina came back with a long drive of their own, a nine play drive that ended in Delhomme finding Steve Smith for an 11 yard score. Smith, who played despite a broken finger, had four catches for 50 yards and that touchdown. Henson led the Cardinals down the field with a minute and a half left in the first half, getting down to the Panthers' 10 yard line before settling on a Neil Rackers field goal to end the half.
A scoreless third quarter led to a fourth quarter where Emmitt Smith scored on a seven yard run. Carolina came back with Stephen Davis, riding him down the field for a score. A long drive by Arizona ended in a punt by Scott Player, who punted it out of bounds at the two yard line. After an incompletion, Delhomme found Rumph for a pick six to put the game away. The 9-1 Arizona Cardinals will host the New York Jes next Sunday.
