2005 NFL DRAFT PREVIEW (Mid-Season Report)

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN - As the NFL nears the mid-way point of the season, teams are usually thinking two things. What can we possibly do to get ready for playoffs or what can we possibly do to improve our team in the draft next year? Teams such as the San Diego Chargers, New York Giants, and Carolina Panthers are looking to the incoming rookie class to help their teams next year. This is the last part of a three-part series, as I'll look at the top seven quarterback, runningback, and receiver prospects eligible for the draft.

Braylon Edwards is the top rated receiver coming out in the draft. He's tall and has huge hands. He's a matchup nightmare near the redzone as well with his jumping ability. The only weakness is his straight line speed.

Mike Williams is the next rated receiver. He's like Maurice Clarett in a way, as he is ineligible to play this season. He was really dominant last year at USC and he has a bigger body than Edwards.

Sharod "Roddy" White is the next receiver on this list. He's the fastest one out of the three top receivers, but is the least polished. He also plays in a weak conference, so the competition doesn't help him like it does Edwards and Williams.

Other receivers are Mark Clayton of Oklahoma, Roscoe Parrish of Miami, Chris Henry of West Virginia, and Troy Williamson of South Carolina. Parrish is the dark horse out of this group. He's small, but has lighting quick speed and would be a boost as a slot receiver on any team.

Pre-Game Matchups

Cardinals QB Drew Henson (123-208, 1973 yards, 15 TD, 10 INT) vs. Dolphins QB A.J. Feeley (130-254, 1582 yards, 12 TD, 8 INT)

Henson continues to impress in his rookie season, but he goes against a secondary that has good cornerbacks in Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain. He could get a boost with the return of slot receiver Bryant Johnson, as he's questionable recovering from a torn calf muscle. Feeley has been good in his first season as a starting quarterback, but he hasn't made Dolphin fans forget Dan Marino. However against a good Arizona secondary, look for Feeley to struggle.​

Cardinals HB Emmitt Smith (125 carries, 447 yards, 7 TD) vs. Dolphins HB Ricky Williams (150 carries, 653 yards, 4 TD)

Smith struggled last week and was replaced by Erik Bickerstaff, who had a good game off the bench. The Cardinals running game depends on which runningback decides to play well; they'll ride the hot back. Williams was rumored to retire before the season but was talked out of that by the ownership. He's having a great season.​

Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (58 catches, 778 yards, 4 TD) vs. Dolphins WR Chris Chambers (33 catches, 423 yards, 3 TD)

This could be a great battle between receiving corps. Fitzgerald and Boldin are, well...the best one-two duo in the league this year. However, Chambers and David Boston have tons of talent and could be in the top five receiving duos in the league. Cardinals get the edge because they have Henson throwing the rock.​

Prediction: Cardinals 31, Dolphins 21​

Thanks. And I know, I was at a grad party that night watching it. Nothing could go right for us; I was screaming explitives the entire game. Needless to say after the game was over, I got wasted, so the Pens are the reason for my hangover yesterday.

I'm working on the next game now, should have it up sometime today. I'm going to try to speed things up a little over the summer with this, so I can get a few seasons in before the updates slow down with Madden and NCAA coming out.

MIAMI, FL (AP)- Anquan Boldin came into the league as the Cardinals' punt returner last year. With Bryant Johnson of Penn State being the team's first round pick, while Boldin was the second rounder, he didn't have high expectations last year. After 101 catches last year, he became the team's top target. Sophomore slump? No way. Boldin picked on Reggie Howard all day, catching two touchdowns off of the same play in Arizona's 34-21 win over the Dolphins.

The opening kickoff was received by Miami back Travis Minor and he got out to his own 19 yard line. From there, Ricky Williams broke a Dexter Jackson tackle and scooted down the field 81 yards for a touchdown. Arizona fans probably though this wiould be a repeat of the performance against Atlanta, but Williams ended up carrying the ball 15 times after that, for only 44 yards. Drew Henson started slow, missing on two straight throws before connecting with Boldin for 83 yards and a score. Miami came right back, as A.J. Feeler hit receiver after receiver before finding Randy McMichael for an 18 yard touchdown. Four straight three and out ended the quarter, with the Cardinals down for the first time since the aftermentioned Falcons game.

The first play of the second quarter had Howard on Boldin in press coverage just like earlier in the game. Boldin made a great fake and broke off into a post route, where Henson found him for a 58 yard score. Miami then went on a 10 play drive before Feeley was picked off by Adrian Wilson, the defensive captain. Arizona went on their own long drive, going 12 plays before Emmitt Smith punching it in from three yards out. After a Neil Rackers field goal to start the second half, Miami struck back with a Feeley 80 yard bomb to Chris Chambers. Dennis Green was furious with cornerback Renaldo Hill afterwards and benched him in favor of Mike Rumph. Good move. Rumph picked off two passes including one for a touchdown to seal the game. Arizona (7-1) hosts the New York Giants next week.

Giants QB Kurt Warner (139-228, 1725 yards, 8 TD, 9 INT) vs. Cardinals QB Drew Henson (138-237, 2286 yards, 17 TD, 10 INT)

Warner hasn't helped the Giants record at all this year, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. It would be wise of New York to get the rookie Eli Manning in there for some playing time in this lost season, but all signs point to Warner still being the starter. Henson is still playing well in his rookie season, and had another nice game last week with over 300 yards passing and two scores.​

Giants HB Tiki Barber (104 carries, 371 yards, 3 TD) vs. Cardinals HB Emmitt Smith (151 carries, 538 yards, 8 TD)

Barber is supposed to be one of the top runningbacks in the league but isn't showing it this year. 371 yards in eight games? Another reason why fans in New York are furious. Smith had a decent game last week with almost 100 yards on the ground and a score. Right now he's tied with Clinton Portis for the most rushing touchdowns with eight.​

Giants WR Amani Toomer (38 catches, 514 yards, 2 TD) vs. Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (63 catches, 814 yards, 4 TD)

Toomer has been Warner's number one target but hasn't produced that much. He has decent numbers but not the numbers that was expected at the start of the season. Fitzgerald still leads the league in catches and his running mate Anquan Boldin is even doing better this season. His four catch, 222 yard performance last week gave him over 1000 yards receiving on the season. He is the first to do so.​

Prediction: Cardinals 42, Giants 14​

GLENDALE, AZ (AP)- This game looked like a mismatch on paper. In one corner, you have the New York Giants, who haven't won since the first week of the season. In the other corner, you have America's darling, the 7-1 Arizona Cardinals, who's rise to power in the NFC this year was definitely not expected. Well the first play showed who was the superior team. Riall Johnson forced a fumble on Giants kick returner Jason Isom on the opening kickoff and Renaldo Hill returned it for a touchdown in the Cardinals 42-7 blowout over the Giants.

The Cardinals defense was stellar once again, allowing only 107 yards total to New York. They also forced four interceptions from Kurt Warner, continuing to show why they have the agruably best secondary in the league. Two three and outs followed the opening kickoff, and Warner got the ball back midway through the first quarter. That's when Warner started the pick parade, throwing a mistake to Duane Starks. Starks, with the interception, adds to his league leading total with seven interceptions. Near the end of the quarter, Warner found Coby Reinhart of the Cardinals for pick number two. However, Drew Henson repaid the favor, finding Giants cornerback Will Allen for an interception.

He got redemption a few drives later, finding Anquan Boldin for a 27 yard gain. After a dropped pass by Nathan Hodel, Emmitt Smith carried the ball four straight times to get Arizona to the seven yard line, where Henson found Larry Fitzgerald for a touchdown. The Giants challenged the call, claiming Fitzgerald's feet weren't in bounds, but the call wasn't overturned. New York missed on both of their challenge opportunties in the game. Emmitt Smith went wild in the second half, scoring two touchdowns. The all-time great carried the ball 30 times for 116 yards. Warner finally found his own receiver late in the game, with a seven yard score to Amani Toomer. The Arizona Cardinals improve to 8-1, boasting the best record in the NFC. They'll head to Carolina to face the Panthers next week.

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. In other franchises I've done with 2K5, if Manning any playing time his rookie year, he'll progress hella quick.
