Think about this...did you ever say to yourself, "oh shit, my team has to face CURTIS MARTIN this week!"? Of course not. He wasn't dynamic, he wasn't any sort of gamebreaker, he didn't take over games. He would run in a straight line for 3 or 4 yards,fall down, and repeat. He never got hurt, played a million years, and racked up some stats.

I doubt there was ever a time Martin was the best player on the field. He was a good player, but not a HOF player.

4.6 ypc with your longest run being of 25 yards is quite a feat imo.

i totally see your point. I just dont agree with it. I think when you start to break down how a guy earned his yards that you open the door to almost any back in the HOF to be scrutinized. Alot has to be said for a guy who didnt get hurt and ran for alot of yards while playing a million years.

People could argue that emmit smith shouldnt be in the HOF because he also played for alot of years and didnt get hurt. But at the same time played behind a mammoth of line that made him look good, when in reality, he wasnt

I said he's not a HOF player, and I gave my reasons why. He was a durable guy who played for a long time. I've seen dozens of guys just like him. He's ordinary when compared to truly great RB's.

I see where you are coming from on the first point. I just prefer to think of the HOF as the greatest to ever play, and I just can't wrap my brain around a guy like Martin being in that class.

FWIW, I think Emmitt is one of the most overated players of all time.

Martin will get into the NFL HOF because the NFL isnt picky about who they let in. Its not like the MLB HOF who you have to be the best of the best to get in.

I'll agree with Curtis Martin being a borderline HOF candidate.

Here's another interesting fact: In 7 of Martin's 11 seasons on the year he average 4.0 ypc or less.

His 2004 season was impressive and probably his best though.

For a running back to play 11 years and only miss 8 games, rushing for 1,000 yards through his first 10 seasons, I'd say Martin was a bad ass running back. And it's not like he didn't get hurt.

Here's my fact. Martin played the last four years of his career on bad ankles. They were so bad he couldn't walk after games, he couldn't play a single game without tweaking one but he would never leave the field.

He'd bust an ankle, get up, and jog back to the huddle in excruciating pain without wincing. He's old school. The reason he didn't bust a long run off in '04 when he lead the league in rushing is because his ankles were so bad. But the dude was still strong, relatively explosive, and had very good vision.

The record for the longest pass thrown by a NON-QB player is 81 yards performed by three players. Pittsburgh Punter Josh Miller to Chris Hope on a fake punt for a TD. Denver WR Arthur Marshall to Cedric Tillman for a TD. Then there is RB/WR Gary Hammond who threw an 81yd NON-TD pass to TE Jackie Smith.

He also has the most completions, TDs, and INTs for any non-QB player.

Martin was always a speed back. For him to win the rushing title for essentially being a north south runner is very impressive IMO.
I cant name another running back who started his career like Dave Megget and ended it like Rodney Hampton.

Hes in no way HOFer. As always people think longevity means you were never great. Rice /Emmitt got in because they had an abundance both.

Martin is the Testaverde/Bledsoe of RBs. No coincidence he played with both of them. Very good. Very consistent. But like w2b said rarely the best guy on the field. Was not a guy who took over games with any regularity.

10 years of consistent 1000+ seasons is a HOF career to me, but thats my opinion. But to me, the fact that when he was able to rush for nearly 1700 yards without ever getting a rush above 22 yards just tells me the guy never had to rely on a big run to pad his stats, because he was consistently getting 4-5 yards on every carry. You do that all the way down the field you're going to score, no? I dont see how this can be distinguished as a bad thing.
