That was true with the Tebow trade, but that's not true with the Russell comeback. What good publicity comes with this announcement? No one is going out there wanting a headline saying they're working out JaMarcus Russell. The Tebow move sold tickets and had great publicity when it first occurred. This does nothing of the sorts.

Bad headlines are still headlines. It brings attention to the team, which is what they've always been about. The Jets have always been the bastard step-child of the NY teams.

That's not true at all. Why would a team coming off of a terrible season, both on the field and off the field, especially public relations wise, still want bad headlines? You really are trying to make something out of nothing here. The Jets do not want bad headlines, and to say they do is ridiculous. Where was the press release by the team about JaMarcus? Where was any comment from the team about JaMarcus? Oh, nowhere? That's right, because it was reported by a local paper.

I can guarentee there is no PR head who would say that continuous bad headlines are going to help the Jets. All it's going to do is drive down the already dwindling ticket sales. They're the laughing stock of the league, why would you continue it?

The Jets want the headlines. First Tebow, and now a Russell comeback? Even bad headlines are headlines. I would hate to be drafted by this franchise now, it looks like they are going nowhere.

Guess the skins wanted bad when you worked him out a little while back. Wouldnt read too much into it, Jets should be exploring every avenue to get better. As long as Brady is a Patriot they have 0 chance at a division title unless they pull a rabbit out their ass.

Free agent QB JaMarcus Russell recently registered a 5.2 forty-yard dash and 29-inch vertical as he attempts his NFL comeback.

Russell is training at the TEST Football Academy in San Diego. "I think he's got some hills to climb," acknowledged TEST CEO Brian Martin. Russell's goals are a 4.8 forty time and 33-inch vertical. "I'm heavier than normal," conceded Russell, who weighed 310 when he began his comeback. Russell's weight goal is 265. He's planning a Pro Day-type workout at some point this offseason.

With his pro day a week away, give or take, JaMarcus Russell says he's no longer “breathing like a fat man.”

The 2007 No. 1 overall pick, whose comeback try is being chronicled in Bleacher Report videos, says he was 315 pounds when he began working out more than two months ago and is down to 288, with 270 the goal.

"Through the first couple weeks I could barely make it through the workout. … It was crazy," Russell said, in a not-so-crazy comment.

"We go in to do the warm-up and here I am breathing like a fat man. So now I'm breathing pretty good and able to stand up on my own two feet."

At the self-proclaimed halfway point of his latest comeback attempt, the 6-foot-6 Russell said his “endurance is getting better, everything is that much better.”

He and his trainers, led by former quarterback Jeff Garcia at the TEST Academy in San Diego, plan to hold a pro day on or about April 10. Reportedly, one of his targets will be Larry Fitzgerald, who has spent the last few years trying to help bad quarterbacks.

Russell hopes to convince a team to invite him to training camp. He last threw a pass in an NFL game on Jan. 3, 2010, the end of his three-year Raiders' career.

JaMarcus Russell continues to make progress in his effort to make an NFL comeback.

On Tuesday, Bleacher Report released its fifth installment in the series chronicling the former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick's journey from oblivion to what he hopes is an NFL tryout.

n the superbly-produced video, Russell admits to being overweight at 315 pounds when the workouts started in February. Now at what he calls the halfway point in his journey, he is down to 288 pounds, hoping to shrink to 270.

The bearded Russell looks in far better shape than in the first video of the series. Losing 27 pounds in less than two months displays a dedication he sorely lacked during his disastrous stint with the Oakland Raiders.

However, this video covers only his weightlifting regimen, which at the end of the day doesn't display an increased ability to read defenses or cut down on sailing passes.

Russell's persistence is commendable, and with a dearth of quarterbacking talent in the draft, perhaps he can convince one NFL team to give him a shot in training camp. But one of the biggest busts in NFL history comes with a ton of baggage, and while he's shown improvement the past two months, Russell is a longshot to find a place on an NFL roster.

The Raiders cut former No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell three years ago, and since then no other team has brought him in. So if you figure you’ve seen the last of Russell on an NFL roster, that seems like a reasonable conclusion.

But there’s at least one person with an NFL team who believes Russell will be in some team’s training camp four months from now. Mike Freeman of CBS talked to an NFC scout who said that teams are keeping an eye on Russell as he tries to get himself back in football shape and get on the field again.

“I’ve been following his comeback story pretty closely. I think a lot of teams are. Good chance he gets a second shot,” the scout said.

What Russell has going for him is that he has great physical talent for the quarterback position, and he’s still only 27 years old. When you’ve got the talent to be an elite quarterback, you can usually find teams willing to give you a second, third and fourth shot. Even Ryan Leaf, who like Russell was cut by the team that drafted him after three years, got another shot.

Still, Russell was there for the taking in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and for three straight seasons zero NFL teams wanted him. It seems unlikely that any team would want him in 2013.
