Is Chicago a Notre Dame town?

I was watching the White Sox game tonight on the dish, and they did a little news brief deal in between innings. One of the lead stories was about ND WR Michael Floyd having his suspension lifted. I can't imagine this minor piece of college football news is playing large nationally, so it got me thinking that Chicago must be a ND town. I would have though that Illinois or even Northwestern would be the team of choice, although I can see Northwestern falling victim to the same fate as Rutgers in NJ, where they have been so bad for so long that nobody really gives a shit.

So is Chicago a ND town?

The say that South Bend is a suburb of Chicago even though it's in Indiana. I vote yes. Northwestern doesn't seem like a school random people would suddenly root for - most of its fans are most likely alumni or had family members go there. Schools like USC and Notre Dame just pick up random fans who don't necessarily have a connection because they have history of success and show up on Primetime games. When's the last time Northwestern was on primetime? The game in Wrigley?

Obviously ND is more of a national team than Northwestern, that's not what i'm asking.

For example, I live in College Station. Texas A&M doesn't have a national following, but you can bet that TAMU is the front page story every Sunday morning.

ND is not Chicago's team. To call a shithole like South Bend a "suburb" of Chicago is erroneous. For college sports, people in Chicago root for Illinois and Northwestern, but those people are graduates of those two schools. The average Chicago person doesn't really care for college sports. Its really a pro sports town. Kind of like New York in that respect.

I know the Floyd news was on the bottom of ESPN and lead off college football live. Plus it's a slow news cycle right now in Chicago. The White Sox suck(which they wouldn't have mentioned since it was during the Sox game), The Cubs suck, no one cares about Bears traning camp, the NBA is in lockout mode, the Blackhawks are forgotten about, and no one gives a shit about the MLS.

I don't know if I'd label Chicago as an ND town persay but I know they have a pretty large fanbase there, South Bend is fairly close to Chicago, and Floyd coming back was a decently interesting bit of news about a college team clsoe by that has national ramifications and ramifications on the Big10/11/12whatever the fuck it is that Northwestern and UofIllinois play in.

Random side note: I'm still shocked Amtrak doesn't run a train to South Bend on gamedays. That'd be a cash cow.

I always assumed Chicago had a decent sized Notre Dame following just due to the amount of Catholics in the city. Same with New York, there's a ton of Notre Dame fans up here that never attended the school. I believe they are referred to as "Subway Alums".

lol people call southbend a suburb of Chicago? Do they know how far Southbend is? It's not even in the vicinity of Chicago. There's some ND fans in Chicago sure, it's a big city, but to call it a ND town would be ridiculous.
