i'm a guy that defends good clean football most of the time, and i think on the whole the crackdown on hitting is bullshit, and i think that most of the flags for unnecessary roughness are at best kowtowing to goodell, but there is 0 defense for that play, he had like 3 steps to lower his head.

That hit was disgusting. Not only did he lead with his head with obvious intent to try to maim McCoy, he didn't even need to hit him in the first place. It was clear that the ball was out of his hand with time for Harrison to realize this.

And its completely baffling that the Browns medical staff let him back in the game. That was a life-threatening decision on their part. I'm actually writing a term paper on sports-related TBI right now, and with the symptoms he was showing he probably shouldn't have had any sort of contact for 2-3 weeks, let along the same drive. If his head got hit again his brain could have been fucked up for life.

Harrison should be suspended for the rest of the season, and some sort of league wide rule needs to be instated about players receiving concussions being removed from the game. Maybe have an NFL-wide physician at each game so that its not up to the teams to make that decision.

I've gone back and watched the clip, like I said before I'm not disagreeing that it shouldn't have been flagged. Sure go ahead and fine him.

I tried to watch closely as I could.. Harrison had redirected, redirected and by the time Colt flicked the ball and his arm was still coming down, he was in the tackle/hit position. There is a fine line to go ahead and plow him or try and pull up because we know these guys are so big and fast. Yes I can see it as a cheap shot and where Harrison went ahead being mr idgaf badass and hit him

At this specific moment, Harrison could have just stopped the act of tackling completely and likely still ran into McCoy because of his momentum, but to say he couldn't have stopped from plowing his head into McCoy is ridiculous.

I pretty clearly didn't say stop on a dime, I said stop the act of tackling, and that he'd still run in to him because of his momentum, but that he did have time to not hit him the way that he did. And yes the timing of it was fine, as in if he hit him legally there would have been no penalty, again I was only saying he had time to attempt to pull up.

I guess the guy just plays hard all the time relentlessly. I believe he has been on the record of saying it is football and hurting people to some degree or whatever. Its just whatever to him, he has worked hard and earned everything he has so why would he stop.

Incredibly stupid, yes, league ban worthy, no. Suspend him and sit him down to drill it into his head that you cannot do that shit anymore. Always pisses me off when a Steeler does that, but I think Clark is way more frequent with leading with the head, it just isn't called as often. A ban is way too extreme a punishment though, Suh's actions on Thanksgiving were just as bad and he had prior incidents but no talk of bans arose.

There's nothing natural about running full speed into a guy that's running full speed at you. I guess this puts me in the "man's game" crowd. I understand your point, but how is that any different than a power running back completely ducking his head and shoulders to gain a yard on 3rd and 1? Should they be penalized?

The league is treading a tight rope trying to prevent these injuries. To go so far as to throw the guy out of the league (especially for that hit last night) would be outrageous. I would hardly consider it a dirty hit.

Harrison is a strong, physical player. He hit a weak, frail quarterback, at full speed, while the QB was stopping to throw the ball. It's gonna look bad. It's not like Harrison launched his helmet into McCoy's; he puts his forearms up, and unloads all his strength into the hit. The result is he hit McCoy in the face, so flag him. That's the rule. It was hardly dirty, though.

Can I toss something out and get a reasonable answer? How is this hit compared to the first down goal line hit by Gocoung (sp?) on Mendenhall?
I know the difference that Mendenhall is a HB and free game, but from the hit standpoint..

exactly. gocong's helmet hit mendy's, just like harrison's hit mcoy's. both times the helmet hit the chest and slid up to the other helmet. james didnt lead with it, he lowered his upper body and struck, just like he is supposed to.

i thought you were supposed to be some kind of smart guy here at vsn? they are all players, if you protcect one you got to protect them all. even colt was cool with james when he came back in. it is a violent sport people. you dont wanna see people hurt go watch synchronized swimming or curling. it is pure physics, you cannot stop a 300 pound object on a dime.

I think the thing McCoy did to Harrison was more of a pride thing to say "yeah I'm fine, the hit wasn't that big a deal." Guess what Colt, you got knocked the fuck out. It was a big deal and you weren't fine.
