Everyone knows those stats are overrated because they are related to each other.

Not only that, but this is a pass-first league and the Bucs play in perhaps the most pass happy division in the league. The Saints and Falcons don't even pretend to run the ball anymore. The Panthers dynamic duo of Stewart and Williams has all but disappeared as well.

The Bucs run D is ranked #1 because 8 of their games come against teams who don't run the ball, which is why they give up so many passing yards.

The Raiders had this same stat ranking a few years ago. The Bucs have some good players, and Goldson and Revis are great additions and upgrades, but they are a few more good players away from behind one of the league's best defenses. They really need an elite pass rusher.

Eagles and Cowboys spent a fortune in money and effort and had 5 CBs that on paper have probowl potential. It amounted to doo doo squat as both teams watched other teams have field days on there secondary.
For me the bottom line is with that pick I'd take my chances on getting a stud player at a far more important position. Does anyone look at the Bucs and think oh my if only this team had CB they'd really raise hell?
Unless you're telling me Revis is going down the Woodson route (Charles or Rod pick one) and bringing vet leadership and solidifying the CB position now and FS in 2 years on a team verging on SB contention it's a huge gamble.

You brought up my point in your post lol. you don't need to spend 16 million dollars on CB's to win a championship, hell you don't even need good ones. You need a strong offense and a front 7 that can disrupt the QB and slow down the offense, so long as you have serviceable corners you're good to go. Bucs could have and should have went that route.

Regardless of how much teams run or pass teams still averaged only 3.5 ypc against the Bucs and the Bucs led the league in tackles behind the line of scrimmage. No matter how you look at it Bucs run defense was damn good last season.

He signed a 4 year, 32 mil dollar contract.

2013: $840,000 (+ $6.16 million "signing" bonus + $2.3 million roster bonus due 3/12 + $200,000 workout bonus)

In 2013 he isn't scheduled to just make some 2.5 million. They are spending money on him too.

You know damn well after how he played last year (which was good) he will want more money after 2013. Wouldn't surprise me if he asked for an extension worth quite a bit of money if he plays similar to how he did last year.

First off, the Jets got a steal on the deal itself. Revis isn't worth a 1st and a 3rd, especially a top 15 pick. You can say otherwise, but a guy who has missed 17 games in the last 3 seasons, coming off of a significant knee injury, and has never shown to be committed to anything but money is not worth those picks. The Jets did well in that regard.

Second, the Bucs got a steal on the contract. No guaranteed money? Really? If Revis doesn't hold out for a new contract, they got a nice deal.

Finally, the CB position is the most overrated position on the field. A CB just plain cannot have the impact it once had. This is a passing league, QBs are going to beat certain CBs no matter what because of the rules and coaching that is so slanted towards the offensive side. I'd much rather invest in a top tier DL/OLB than a CB. A pass rush can make a defensive backfield look great, I don't know if the reverse is true any more.

It's hard to take out top WR's at all now with the rules, plain and simple. Secondary is become less and less relevant as the years go by. Not worth the 16 mil, no way. Exactly, but I say he'll see year 2 by about a 75% chance. They cannot give up a 1st and 3rd for a one year player. He might hold out, but he'll still see year 2. Year 3 will be the time he either holds out or is cut, no way does he stick with this deal.

It's beyond being a pass happy league. In the grand scheme DB's are powerless to stop the passing games in today's NFL. Bargain basement is the way to go with DB's, especially corners. It's the last position I would spend resources on.

If you want to combat the passing game these days, it begins and ends with pass rush imo. Forget trying to cover anybody with these rules and these schemes. Find two cheap corners who are basically average, and hope you can get to the QB on a consistent basis.

Agree 100%. The Redskins won the division with a streak of wins near the end with a terrible secondary. They won with their pass rush and spending their resources on the offensive side of the ball. That's where you've got to spend it right now. It's a league where any QB can tear a secondary to shreds if they have any time to throw, so you've got to be able to set the pace offensively as well as not give the opposing QB time to throw. While I think Revis could still make a substantial difference for a team, it wasn't worth the price the Bucs had to pay and I would have spent those resources differently.

In 2009 he had a historic year in coverage for a CB and in 2010 he started slow coming back from the holdout but broke out that season when he shut down Calvin Johnson to 1 catch for 13 yards. Then 2011 he was damn good for the entire season once again.

People have started biting on W2B's CB's mean nothing line and have now completely undervalued how good Revis plays. VSN posters have always found a way to discredit Revis so it really doesn't matter how well he plays no one on these boards will really ever appreciate it. Aso year after year we see teams with complete shit at CB winning tons of games and winning the SB. I don't think anybody is saying Revis shouldn't be an upgrade or won't improve the defense, but you can win by lining up far far worse.

You are acting like being critical of a team trading two premium draft picks & handing out $16M to a position that has proven to not be essential to winning in today's NFL environment, especially when the player is pushing 30 & coming off a major knee injury, isn't a fair critique. C'mon. $16M is a lot of money to tie up in what like it or not has proven to be a non essential position. This isn't a QB or LT or DE. It's hard to win with shitbums at those spots. It's not hard to win at all with bad CB's. This isn't 2009. And even if Revis is still that good, i'm still not sure a corner is worth $16M, a first rounder, and a third rounder.

EDIT - there is a reason he got no guaranteed money. It's the knee. I think both sides realize this is a one year deal. If Revis isn't awesome, he's cut. If Revis is good, he holds out and is likely cut. Like I said, I think it's 50/50 at best he lines up for TB in 2014, and there is no chance he sees year 3.
