I don't think the one year head start of the 360 can be underestimated. That was a HUGE reason why the 360 took such a dominant hold. MS obviously felt the same because they rushed the hardware so that they could be first. Back in the MM days I can't even begin to count how many hard core PS2 guys became 360 guys because it was the first next gen console and they didn't want to wait another year. A year later they were fully invested in the console because their friends had also all bought 360s.

Yeah that tide turn was pretty instantaneous. 360 had a cool factor that kept propogating. "PlayStation" was a name MUCH MUCH bigger and synonymous with being a goto console than 360 ever was. But that combo of Sony decisions and MS managing to release early and be cool undid all of it. Why MS didnt think it could happen to them is so fucking annoying. As a consumer the amount of cool shit we never experience because of hubris by these companies is staggering.

Did most of you guys own both systems, and if so which did you get first and why?

I purchased 360 for all the wrong reasons. I thought it would be this epicenter of music and video with its WMC integration and ability to rip CDs to drive.
XBOXoriginal let games like NFL2K play stadium songs or soundtracks directly from your collection etc. I thought it would naturally expand on the amazing features of XB1.... None of that managed to be the case. WMC integration was divided and terrible. Essentially no codecs that rational humans used worked (xvid , divx , mkv). MP3 stuff was a complete joke and no games that I recall took advantage. That complete falsehood that we would be all trading game saves and rosters via XBL infuriated me. So I was left wondering wtf I bought it for. RB6 Vegas was awesome MP but a let down SP as voice commands were barely used. If it wasnt for Gears of War and a weeks vacation right after xmas to play it , I probably would have given up after my first one RROD'd.
