They won A title. With Duncan being the go to guy on that team. As evidenced by his 2 Finals MVP Trophies.

Tim Duncan. He's the best fundamentally sound player of all time. He's the best power forward of all time. He can win games and carry teams by himself. Before the Celtics, KG struggled to do anything in the playoffs and he needed 2 other All-Stars (Sprewell and Cassell) just to get out of the first round.

Sure, Duncan has Ginobili and Parker, but how much better has he made those guys?

It's somewhat close, but Tim Duncan is the best PF of all-time and Kevin Garnett ranks 4 or 5 after Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and there's maybe another player or two you could rank over him (imo he's 4th).

As much as it pains me to agree with FT, hes right. Its laughable for you to say KG is way ahead of Duncan.

What kind of player you looking for in the said situation? I think KG might be a better leader and obviously is more intense. But Tim leads by example and is one of the most fundamentally sound players in NBA history. And hes got the rings to match.

TD goes down higher on the all-times great list, but ive always been a bigger fan of Garnett.

Duncan by a mile. Dude was so good it wasnt even funny. IMO hes better then Malone. Hes underrated or not talked about as much cuz hes quiet and in VSN where everyone here is 16 the louder the player the better.

Duncan came in as a rookie and was immdeiately one of the best PFs in the L, now granted KG came out as a kid but that doesnt take away from duncans feat.

Who said I'm mad? I just posted stats, and got come at with the titles argument, which is possibly the weakest one around.

Uhm clearly you don't know much about athletes view titles. The title argument is one of the best when comparing two players many consider close in ability. I'm not saying Fisher is better than Jason Kidd, but when two players are close like KG and Duncan, titles plays a big part of the argument.

Winning a championship in sports is a lot more important than Garnett averaging one more rebound per game than Duncan did. Will anyone remember that in 04-05 Garnett averaged on more rebound per game than Duncan did? No. People will remember Duncan winning his 3rd NBA title.

Stats are important to the argument but so are titles, and like someone else said Duncan has 4.

I usually agree with you Esjay, but no, it absolutely does not. Duncan has been on much more talented teams and much better coached teams.

KG's best shot at a title before he finally won one was in 04 I think when he lost to the Lakers when they built their last run team. He did everything he could in that series, but the team just plain wasn't good enough to win a championship. You can't say that about most of Duncan's teams, point blank. The Wolves got killed in that series because they couldn't stop Shaq. You can't expect to stop Shaq with Michael Olowakandi, Ervin Johnson, and OLLIE MILLER. Really, not even going back to when Duncan played with a HOFer in The Admiral, but Ollie Miller makes Rasho Nesterovic look like Hakeem Olajuwon.

I don't really like the whole rings vs. rings argument. Obviously, you have to take that into account when figuring how great a player is, but directly comparing two non-comparable results because the situations are different and acting like they somehow were. It just doesn't sit well. Duncan has been on some really good teams. Manu, Parker, Bowen, Stephen Jackson, Robinson, even Robert Horry. And who were the guys that finally gave KG the "help" he needed? An old Sam Cassel, Latrell Spreewell, Starbury at the start, Wally Szczerbiak?

It's not at all like the Spurs just so happened to be better teams than the Wolves most every year because Duncan was better than Garnett. They were well put together teams from the start and KG's teams almost always had glaring flaws.

Perhaps I've been underrating KG a little in this thread. It's definitely pretty close. I'm a huge fan of both players. You're right though, the Spurs are run ten times better than the T-Wolves.

But its not like the Spurs would make the playoffs, beat the T-wolves in the 1st round, then lose in the next round. The Spurs consistently beat the best teams in the NBA and won multiple titles with Duncan. You are basically rewarding KG for playing on a bad team rather than rewarding Duncan for consistently beating the NBA's elite teams.

Exactly.

Put Ginobli & Parker on Garnett's team at any point in his career and I doubt they would get the same looks at the basket they do now. The reason is Duncan dominates the post & has to be double-teamed or it's a steady diet of really short shots. Garnett has always been much more of perimeter player. You have to respect what he could do facing the basket but you could live with him getting 25 by hitting jumpers more than you could live with Duncan getting 25 mainly because KG would normally get his 25 in the flow of the game while Duncan does it by taking over the game, commanding the ball and not only hitting that turnaround j but also running up the fouls on your bigs until you really have no chance to guard him. So now you're doubling him and everyone else on the floor is taking wide-open shots.

One more time: Tim Duncan is the best PF in the history of the game.

The issue here is that Duncan's game is more conducive to winning NBA Championships, while Garnett's game is more conducive to winning Fantasy Basketball Championships. I gete into this discussion all the time with my wife who hates Duncan....I always tell her don't fall in love with stats and her problem is that she plays too much fanstasy basketball.
