Knicks now in lead for Melo?
As
ESPN's Marc Stein and ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported, Carmelo Anthony met with the Nets on Saturday and left "noncommittal" on whether he would sign a three-year, $65 million extension with them.
But according to
Johnathan Abrams of the New Yorks Times, "Anthony is informing those close to him that he will not sign a contract extension if he is traded to the Nets, according to a person aware of Anthony's preference."
If Anthony indeed won't sign an extension with the Nets, that likely means a trade to New Jersey won't happen.
Which means the Knicks might now be in the lead.
Word from Frank Isola of the New York Daily News is Knicks owner James Dolan is now the one orchestrating the trade for New York's angle -- who is reportedly more in favor of a deal with Denver than GM Donnie Walsh or head coach Mike D'Antoni. Add in the fact that Anthony, by all accounts, wants to be a Knick and sign an extension with them, and it's looking like New York may now be the clubhouse leader for Anthony.
