Lan's Homegrown Rosters Progress Thread

Taking Pete's advice and making a separate thread, as not to clutter up the main Show thread.

For those of you that haven't been paying attention, it's an idea that was inspired by a stat I saw the other night on Quick Pitch saying how the Mets entire lineup was homegrown, which is the first time that's happened in 41 years. I thought to myself, hmmm what would teams look like if I put all the major league players back on the team that they originally signed for?

And, so that's what I've set off to do. I'll be uploading this to the roster vault upon completion for everyone that's interested to use it. And I'll keep the progress updated here. Questions and the like can be directed to me here as well.

Roster wise, the goal is for full 25 man rosters only. I try to leave the top prospects on their prospects, and only swap random bummy minor leaguers with no potential in order to get players on the right team. Unfortunately on The Show, there's no way to just add and drop players. You actually have to swap to do any kind of player movement, so I'm forced to move around players from team to team. Minor inconvenience, but given that the goal of the roster project is to get guys on their original team, it means little to me if Joe Schmoe career minor leaguer is on the right team nor not.

Yankees

Yanks lineup took a huge hit with Swisher, A-Rod, Tex, Granderson, and Martin all departing, and being replaced by Shelley Duncan, Hideki Matsui, Jesus Montero, Eduardo Nunez, Nick Johnson, and Austin Jackson. Yikes. Rotation is a bit weakened as well with the departure of C.C. and Kuroda. Kennedy and Karstens return. Bullpen improves. Soriano's gone, but Clippard, Coke, and Choate are solid additions.

Rays

Rays were an interesting case. I wasn't expecting to add a lot as when I really thought about it, they've not lost very many big name players. The additions of Crawford, Hamilton, and Young have certainly improved the offense. They still don't have any middle infielders, however, and now only Aubrey Huff at 1st. Bullpen is a mess as well.

Blue Jays

Toronto's the early winners in this one. The return of Marcum, Halladay, and Carpenter to a rotation already including Ricky Romero and Henderson Alvarez gives them EASILY the best rotation in the league. I really can't think of another team that will have a better staff. There's depth there as well with a bunch of 4-5 starters in AAA. Bullpen is decent as well.

Lineup doesn't change a whole lot. Bunch of old familiar faces return in Rios, Wells, O-Dog, Aaron Hill. Biggest return is Michael Young, who while an original draft pick by the Jays, never made it past AA in their system before being traded to Texas. Toronto didn't do well there. (he was traded for Esteban Loaiza).

Surprisingly, they aren't really as bad as I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, they're still horrible, but they have gained a respectable rotation. Lineup...not so much. I think it's marginally better than the crap they had originally, but still not really going to strike fear into anyone.

Indians

Another team that pretty much treads water here. Some big names come back in Thome, Manny, Martinez, and Peralta to the offense, but departed are Carlos Santana, Travis Hafner, Cabrera, etc. Feels like a lateral move, except to a class of older players. And at this point in their careers the big name players are hardly big name anymore. Plus Thome has to play 1st base since V-Mart has to catch, unless you want Chris Gimenez to be your starting catcher on a major league ballclub. Pitching's still pretty bad, even with Sabathia back in the picture. Bullpen is atrocious.

Yankees bullpen is so stacked. They'll need it with the sad excuse for an offense they have out there though.

edit: Make that another one that I missed. Soriano is a Yankee as well. Don't know where I want to put him yet in the lineup. I'll leave him on the bench for now. You could probably DH him over Matsui, or I guess stick Gardner in right and Soriano in left.

That's gonna happen a lot. Guys that weren't drafted don't show up on the list on B-R that I'm using to look up, since it's a draft list. Amateur free agent signings, especially when the players are on teams I haven't gotten to yet, I'm gonna have to add as I spot them.

Royals

Didn't gain a whole lot as the core of their team already is homegrown. Carlos Beltran and David DeJesus are the most notable bats returning. Zack Greinke is a strong addition to the rotation as well. The lineup and bullpen are fairly strong, but the starting pitching, as usual for the Royals, is a big disappointment.

Twins

Twins roster is a pretty familiar bunch. The only position player that hasn't played for the Twins in recent years is A.J. Pierzynski, and Torii Hunter. Everyone else was either there already, or just left this off-season. The lineup was a bit tricky to make in order to get all the best bats in the lineup. Cuddyer winds up stuck at 2nd base, a bit out of position for him, but a position he's played sporadically throughout this career. You could probably start Luke Hughes there if you really care that much. Mauer winds up DHing, with Pierzynski at catcher. Again, you could probably swap that, or if you really want you can move Mauer to 1st and DH Morneau if you want to go the health angle of it all.

Pitching-wise, I was a little bit surprised in that I forgot/wasn't aware that Johan Santana was originally an amateur signing by the Astros, so the rotation isn't as strong as I was expecting. Garza joins, Liriano departs. Slowey's back in the fold as well. The pen sees the return of J.C. Romero, Jessie Crain, LaTroy Hawkins, Grant Balfour and Jose Mijares.
