Gilbert Melendez was on the original list, even on the 2nd list, finally I decided to leave him off (Fedor also), I believe Gilbert is one of the best fighters in the world, a top pound for pound fighter, but I just didn’t feel right putting him on the list, I feel like he does try to finish every fight, except the biggest fight of his career
Gilbert is a guy who always talks about being elite, being as good as ‘The UFC guys’ (which he is), but when you get your chance to fight on network television you don’t go out there to win a decision, to just do what you have to do, you go out to make a statement, Gil is/was a ‘Strikeforce guy’, even while making a name in Japan he was one of the corner pieces of Strikeforce when they decided to step it up, not saying Gil didn’t, because he has, just didn’t do it when everything fell into place on CBS
Gil didn’t have the luxury of being a ‘made man’ in the UFC, putting on a stinker here and there doesn’t mean as much to the casuals when you are in the UFC, he should have and could have TKO’d Aoki, instead he went safe and now is playing the price by being left of the most prestigious list in MMA, the Kawajiri fight almost got him back on, but a little to late, a little to late...
