Lovie Smith, NFL Coach of the Year?

Haley has definitely turned the Chiefs around. If we win a playoff game he should get it. Otherwise, see above..

Assistant Coach of the Year though should go to either Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis or the special teams coach for the Chargers.. :shifty:

In regards to Lovie Smith I wonder what the difference was. Going into the season the guy was surely on the hot seat, as the media and fans were basically saying this was his last year. However, so far this year the team is playing well and will probably win 10-12 games. The media and fans love him......what has Love done that is different?

Kept his team relatively healthy. And gotten some breaks in the schedule.

The Packers are winning in spite of McCarthy. The offensive playcalling can be quite offensive at times. See the Redskins game where Brandon Jackson was gaining solid yardage but then in the 2nd half the run game was abandoned to start throwing it all over the yard. I understood that a little better a few weeks prior vs. the Bears but even then the Packers should have attempted to run at least a little to keep the defense honest.

However, so far this year(the team is about to be challenged in the next 4 games) the team is playing well and will probably win 10-12 games. What has Love done that is different?

He's still not a good head coach and he hasn't done anything differently. Every time they show him on the sidelines he looks dead inside like Marvin Lewis. They're barely winning most of the games and in most cases it is despite Lovie Smith that they pull it off.

Their most impressive win was vs Philly and I'll admit that they played very well offensively against them. They also played Mike Vick better than any other team has been able to so far.

The difference isn't in what Lovie has done this year. It is bringing in Peppers and Cutlulz.. I think Cutlet is finally figuring out the Martz offense, Forte has looked better in recent weeks and the defense is playing pretty good football as well. Having Peppers and Urlacher on the same defense has helped out a lot apparently. I'm not all that familiar with everything that Lovie Smith does, but if he is the GM too I suppose we can give him the credit. Otherwise, it is the assistants and the players that have the Bears at 9-3.

However, as we know Cincy sucks this year and Lewis is right back where he was before last year. I wonder if Chicago will be able to continue the success next year? If not does Lovie Smith suck again? In the meantime in Cincy it appears they wasted a year of not bringing someone new in because of the false hopes of believing Lewis' had finally taken the next step.

I think Lovie has been more flexible this year in dealing with who gets playing time. He's made better decisions and has been quicker to pull the trigger. He's re-shuffled the O-line until he found a decent combination, he's given PT to Knox and Bennett at WR, he quickly benched Mark Anderson at DE. Much different from the Lovie of the past, who would continue running the Tampa 2 with Nick Roach at MLB...only moving Roach when it became public knowledge that Roach was too stupid to remember the defensive play calls.

That said, his "game management" has always been atrocious, and this year is no different. The real key, IMO is that he has the players to run his defense. Urlacher can make the deep pass coverage drop at MLB, and Peppers is able to provide a pass rush so that the Bears can leave their safeties in deep zones and not blitz the LBs.

I just don't know of many coaches that would take the Bengals job unless they were really young and trying to get a foot in the door like Lewis was when he came out of Baltimore. Cincinnati needs a Cowher type that is going to yell so hard you think his teeth are going to fly out at you. The owner also needs to give up control and hire a GM. They've drafted decently in the past couple of years but the owner is a terrible personnel guy.

I dont really think Bears fans like Lovie, even after the successful season. But the successful season has been the reason hes been spared in the media. Dude is still a pretty fucking dense coach.

It is amazing how poorly the defense plays in Cincy with how talented the roster is and how good of a defensive coach they have. It is very similar to Billick, I agree.

I guess the perfect formula for a coach is a guy who isn't a specialist at all. Like Harbaugh for example. A special teams guy that got a head coaching job. His teams have been pretty good offensively and defensively since taking over. Or maybe it is just the staff. Todd Haley is not a good head coach, but having Weis and Crennel and Pioli in the front office has made him look like a genius this year.
