I really am not sure. They have a subscription feature where you get access to their data. I'm not paying to find out what it is tho.

We know that Madden was hotter out of the gate initially than Madden '12 based on articles that were published back in September. I'd like to know how current the VG numbers are before I speculated on whether or not '13 sales will be flat, behind or ahead of '12 volumes. I mean if they are on October YTD numbers, then it is quite possible that the holiday sales in North America could exceed 1M units. If those numbers are based on November YTD numbers (doubtful considering today is 12/6) then EA is screwed on having a chance to at least break even with last years numbers.

All sales estimates on VGChartz are arrived at via a number of proprietrary and ever-developing methods:

Passively polling end users to find out what games they are currently purchasing and playing
Polling retail partners to find out what games and hardware they are selling
Using statistical trend fitting and historical data for similar games
Studying resell prices to determine consumer demand and inventory levels
Consulting with publishers and manufacturers to find out how many units they are introducing into the channel

All data is regularly checked against manufacturer shipments and data released publicly from other tracking firms to ensure accuracy.

I would have to guess that they are still working with October's "estimates" then. In that case, they don't mean much until we see the holiday sales volumes. Let's check back in mid-January and see where they are because at that point, Madden '13 is headed for the discount bin at most retailers. Nobody is buying a new copy at the end of football season.

VGChartz has GTA IV sales (globally across all platforms) at 20.06 million units, but Rockstar/Take-Two just recently announced 25 million units sold. No reason to think they couldn't be just as off with Madden sales.

don't publishers count "sold" as what has been shipped out to retailers though? ie company ships 10 million copies to gamestop they sell 5 million but I can claim 10 million sold?

Yep. EA gets paid when EB buys it from them. Wtf would they care what EB moves.

well that sounds like where they are getting their numbers from, not from what the company ships but what is actually sold to a consumer

Ultimately they care because they need to move more product. With decreasing sales over the past few years under Ian Cummings, they removed him and inserted some 'change'...hence, the first year of changes...if sales decrease again next year...I wouldn't be surprised to see even more changes. Stock companies don't put up with losses/decreasing sales for extended periods of time. Possible changes? Smaller team, leaner (smaller employee salaries) team working on Madden. Possible crappier product or maybe just a product with window dressing changes...who knows...we can only hope that Roger Goodell looks at this and says, "we need more people interested and want to spread the NFL license around to some other video game firms!"

Quick look, they don't reveal much about an indiviual game's numbers. They speak in generalities, and bunch up all of the EA sports titles, Maybe if you wait for the 10-k you'll get better information.

EDIT: On second look not really, they don't give any specifics. For Madden 13 quasi analysis you'd have to wait to 10-k FY 2013 it looks like.
