I don't know exactly, but it seems like Randall had some problems playing behind poor Eagle lines...
His rookie year, with 81 attempts, 29 rushing attempts (I wasn't around, so I couldn't tell you how many of those were scrambles and how many were created runs); those are 110 drop-backs. He was sacked 20 times in addition to that. 20/130 = .153846 ~ 15%
Earnest Jackson had 1028 yards, but only a 3.6 YPC average...
His best year, in 1998 (with Minnesota), with 425 passing attempts, 32 rushing attempts, he was also sacked 20 times. Robert Smith averaged 4.8 Y/A, had 1187 yards; Randall's backup Brad Johnson had over 100 attempts (101 wherein he wasn't sacked or scrambling) and was sacked 4 times...
Two of his best year in Philly were 1988 and 1990. In 88, he threw for his most yards with 3808, 24 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. His first Pro Bowl. Team's leading rusher with 624 yards on 93 attempts. He had 560 attempts... Sacked
57 times. Second-leading rusher was Keith Byars with 517 yards on a 3.4 average. Third-leading rusher was Anthony Toney, with 502 on 3.6.
In 90, he threw for 3466 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Third-straight Pro Bowl. He was the teams leading rusher with 942 yards on 118 attempts. He had 465 attempts... Sacked
49 times. The team's second-leading rusher was Heath Sherman, with 685 yards on 4.2 Y/A. Third? Anthony Toney, 452 yards, 3.4 Y/A.
Now, these could be anomalies based solely on the year.
In 1988 and 1990, respectively, Dan Marino was sacked 6 and 15 times.
Joe Montana? 34 and 29.
Granted, Montana and Cunningham liked to scramble, but Cunningham was known for leading his team in rushing yards... So I somehow doubt that's where the majority of his sacks came from.
But, I wasn't there. I only know this because of pro-football-reference.
Care to retort?
Yeah I actually really like Clausen. He played in a pro-style offense to so he should be able to play early. Arguably the most NFL ready QB in the draft. I also like his mobility and ability to make plays outside of the pocket.
I hate to say it (SC - V FOR VICTORY!) but he put up good stats in a pro-style system with an average defense on teams that were bad, not due to a lack of talent, but a lack of coaching.
