I'd be more impressed by that trade if he didn't immediately flip Napoli for a fat, washed up reliever. Brutal.

Absolutely, but if in addition to shedding that contract you also got an elite power hitting catcher on the verge of a career year, that'd have been even more impressive.

Further thoughts on this deal......

Marlins kick off a new stadium by investing loads of cash in Jose Reyes, Mark Buerhle and Heath Bell, intending to hopefully make some noise and prove excitement for their first season in a new park. Now, all three of those players are gone, and along with them, Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson, who were cornerstone pieces of the franchise for a time.

I realize what they've received prospect-wise, and I know they saved some money- even though we have no idea about any financial commitments they need to make with Reyes or Buerhle in this deal.

However, I still don't think you can sit back and do nothing this off-season and expect the fans to be happy. After last off-season, you aren't going to sell them on holding out for another "rebuild" like the Florida Marlins of years past. This off-season, they should seriously look to extend Stanton and make him happy that way, as well as look at adding a piece or two in FA who will be around when those prospects finally make the majors. I'm not implying lets buy a competitor, but the ownership and front office can't afford to mail in this season with the fans and expect it to go over well. They need something to be excited over.

This trade doesn't have much to do with the future of the Miami Marlins, it was made to trim overhead costs so that Loria can pocket more luxury tax revenue.

Trust me, as an Orioles fan, I understand that completely, as Peter Angelos tends to do much the same. However, why dump $200 million into players, trade them and save most of their money, and then not add anyone else, or do anything with it? That defies even Angelos logic.

Jeffrey Loria has conned his way to essentially quadrupling the Marlins value as a franchise without having to win or without having to even look like he's fielding a good team.

He did the same thing with the Expos, but the city wouldn't be conned into fronting the bill on the stadium. LOL @ Montreal's government being less corrupt than another city.

Because he promised the tax payers who gave him $500 million under false pretenses that he would do so. Now that he has the new stadium, he can sell the team for profit, or continue to run it with bare bones expenses and steady revenue.

For baseball reasons, I actually support the logic behind this trade, but it's such a shady deal by Loria (who already murdered baseball in one city and ended up with the Marlins as his reward) that it's tough to stomach.

Speaking at the conclusion of the owners' meetings, Selig said Thursday the trade hasn't officially been presented to him. But he said the matter is under review and he talked to two independent baseball people who feel the Marlins did well in the proposed swap.

Miami has agreed to send All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson to Toronto for a group of the Blue Jays' top prospects. The trade is pending physicals, but many Marlins fans are upset with the deal since the team just moved into a new publicly financed ballpark.
