I agree, although that could have been posted after Halladay winning as well. Both were the clear-cut choices, IMO.

Meh, I guess. I can't say I have a huge problem with the choice. The lack of wins were not his fault, and the rest of his stat line was ridiculous. But I think there something to be said for CC and Price who started games down the stretch in the midst of a tense pennant race. The Cy Young is pretty much like an MVP for pitchers. If you take Felix away from Mariners, they go from horrible to putrid. You can make a case for maybe Price more then CC, that if you take them off their respective staffs, they are most likely just outside the pennant race.

I agree that making high pressure starts should be a factor. I have no issue with Felix winning, but I wouldn't have went nuts if CC won, and can understand the argument either way.

What is more high pressure than what Felix had to deal with? "If you give up a run, we lose." Spare me from feeling bad for all the pressure CC had to deal with as his team spotted him 5-runs in every ballgame.

And I don't agree that the Cy Young is an MVP of pitchers. I've always just seen it as "the best pitcher in the league".

The whole "valuable" argument is extremely convoluted even when it's done for offensive players, especially in baseball.

How is having a 76% Winning pct for a team that won 59% of their games any more impressive than having a 52% Winning pct for a team that won 34% of their games?

Pitching against the Orioles in September when your team is 30 games out is a lot less intense than pitching against Boston or TB in September in a playoff race. Felix didn't make a meaningful start beyond May.

I would also argue that CC groved plenty of fastballs in games with a big lead, inflating his averages. Felix rarely had the opportunity to do that, pitching in closer games. Pitchers don't pitch in a vaccum, which is something lost on saber guys sometimes.

I would have voted for Felix, but again, I wouldnt throw a fit over CC if he won.

Fair enough. I just think that the difference in W-L, the high pressure games Price and CC pitched down the stretch, and the fact that they pitched in a better division, would at least keep them in the Cy Young conversation. I just don't think it was as cut and dry as you do.

It's cool. It's just an adjusted/neutral stat that tries to eliminate inflated ERAs from either a) an inferior league b) pitchers or hitter's ballparks.

Adjusted ERA+, often simply abbreviated to ERA+ or ERA plus, is a pitching statistic in baseball. It adjusts a pitcher's earned run average (ERA) according to the pitcher's ballpark (in case the ballpark favors batters or pitchers) and the ERA of the pitcher's league. Average ERA+ is set to be 100; a score above 100 indicates that the pitcher performed better than average, below 100 indicates worse than average.

For instance, if the average ERA in the league is 4.00, and the pitcher is pitching in a ballpark that favors hitters, and his ERA is 4.00, then his ERA+ will be over 100. Likewise, if the average ERA in the league is 3.00, and the pitcher is pitching in a ballpark favoring pitchers, and the pitcher's ERA is 3.00, then the pitcher's ERA+ will be below 100.

Don't get me wrong, I completely see your point on CC playing in more "meaningful" games, I think that's absolutely true, but overall Felix was the more dominant pitcher and I really think that's the crux of the Cy Young. Felix was far and away the best pitcher in the American League last year.
