It was a tough season for catchers in Toronto as the Jays used a total of five catchers throughout the season despite the fact they had a bona fide number one catcher (Rod Barajas) for the first time this decade. Barajas was one of the Jays' best players all season and made his first All Star team. If it had not been for a late season injury that kept him out a month he could have hit 30 home runs. Behind Barajas no one really stood out until late in the season when rookie J.P. Arencibia laid claim to the lead in the early race for backup catcher next season. The veterans of the bunch, Thigpen, Barrett and Chavez were all inconsistent this season and it is possible that none of them will be back next season.

This unit was led by the sweet hitting of first baseman Lyle Overbay who rebounded from a dismal 2008 campaign to lead the American League in hitting and earn a spot as an All Star. Along with midseason pickup Adrian Beltre this unit provided tons of power for the light hitting Jays through many feel Beltre did not perform up to expectations in the latter part of the season. Mark Sobolewski and Jose Bautista were perhaps the Jays' best bench players this season and the 21 year old Sobolewski looks like a middle of the order talent.

The starters in the middle of the Jays' infield combined for 15 home runs this season, something the Jays had hoped would double this year for Aaron Hill and Marco Scutaro. However, they did provide bang for the Jays' buck on the defensive side of the ball where they became on of the best double play combinations in baseball this season. Hill's backup Ryan Raburn, a midseason acquisation from the Detroit Tigers, was a very hot hitter until he went down to injury in late August. Scutaro's backups on the other hand, combined for only two home runs all season and due to the amount of injuries that seemed to befall Blue Jays shortstops, the team played every shortstop in their system this season, through the results were not what they hoped for.

Everyone knows about the sweet hitting outfielders the Jays employ, from grimy veteran to fresh faced youngster, this outfield had it. The grimy veteran was May signing Jim Edmonds, who if not for an injury that kept him out three months, could have hit 30 home runs. Edmonds' was not only a middle of the order threat but a mentor for youngsters Adam Loewen, Adam Lind and Travis Snider, all who had breakout seasons. The franchise players in the outfield rebounded from off years as well as Alex Rios and Vernon Wells combined to hit 41 home runs and drive in 200 runs to dispell the notion they were overpriced busts.

The discussion about the Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitchers starts and ends with Roy Halladay. After a terrible first half in which he went into the All-Star break with a 6-8 record, Halladay went 11-1 the rest of the way to push the Jays into playoff contention. Another bright spot was Canadian left hander Scott Richmond who finished 14-8 with a 4.16 ERA and stepped up as the second starter after the Jays traded touted righty Jesse Litsch at the deadline for Beltre. The Jays played a lot of youth at this position this season and garnered strong performances from young pitchers such as Brian Burres, Brett Cecil and Bryan Bullington who efficiently filled the holes Dustin McGowan and Shawn Marcum left. With those two top of the rotation guys back next year look for this unit to be one of the league's best.

Ryan) and prime setup man (Jason Frasor) were both sent down late in the season due to burgaining performance while the young callups all looked as if they were thrown into the fire too quickly. The bullpen blew at least 15 games for the Jays and for most players inconsistentcy brought them down. The Jays and manager Cito Gaston expect a better performance from the 'pen next season.

Yankees caught cheating, Jays clinch playoff spot

NEW YORK, NY (AP) -- When Cito Gaston got the call he was sitting on the porch San Antonio, Texas home reading the newspaper not realizing that what he was about to hear would be on the front page of that very newspaper the next day emblazoned with the headline "Yankees caught cheating, disqualified from the playoffs"

What that meant of course for Gaston, was that he needed to get to Toronto as soon as possible to inform his players, who were cleaning out their lockers, to repack them and prepare for a trip to the West Coast where the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim would play host to them in the American League Division Series.

"I was shocked, dumbfounded, whatever word you want to use that's what I was," Gaston told reporters yesterday, "The first thing I did was call J.P. [Riccardi, Jays GM] and tell him to call all the guys and tell them to come back up."

The reason for Gaston's surprise was due to the heartbreaking loss the Jays suffered in the season finale at the hands of a walk off two run home run off the bat of Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora that left them in a dead heat with the Yankees after the season's final game. However, because the Yankees had won the season series handily, Jays managemant and players thought that their season had been heartbreakingly cut short, until the call that is.

According to various reports, a clubhouse raid by an FBI drug team yielded vast amounts of steroids and Human Growth Hormone that according to one unnamed source, the team had been using all year. This raid came in the light of the Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal that took place during Spring Training that placed a dark cloud over the teams head for most of the year.

"These allegations are profound and unfair and the New York Yankees will fight this to the laws greatest extent to prevent a hallowed reputation tarnished." A team spokesman said yesterday.

While this may be just another notch in one of the most infamous era's in baseball history, Gaston sees it as a chance for his team to prove they belong in the playoffs even without the help of the rival Yankees, who forfeit all of their wins this season.

"It feels great for us but obviously with this scandal coming out, baseball is not in the best of shape but that still doesn't make it any less the sweeter."

Looks like that porch in San Antonio will be deserted a little while longer.
