2009 NBA Draft Recap
Pick #1 - New Jersey Nets - Hasheem Thabeet - C - Connecticut
Why This Was a Good Pick
By picking Hasheem Thabeet the Nets no doubt are one of the best defensive teams in the league. Thabeet, Sean Williams, and last year's first round pick Brook Lopez are all elite shot blockers down low. The Nets won't ever be dominated at the center spot again.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
The Nets weren't really in need of another center, especially with the spectacular rookie season Brook Lopez had last year. New Jersey should've focused on another position while developing Lopez as one of the league's top big men.
Pick #2 - Los Angeles Clippers - Blake Griffin - PF - Oklahoma
Why This Was a Good Pick
The Clippers haven't been contenders in a very long time. Griffin's energy and passion for the game will draw fans and motivate his teammates to play harder. Griffin gives Los Angeles one of the best frontcourts in the league now with Chris Kaman, Marcus Camby, and Zach Randolph playing alongside him.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
Griffin will most likely step right in to the starting lineup, which means the Clippers will have to deal with an unhappy Zach Randolph. Randolph won't be content with coming off of the bench so a move might be in store for Los Angeles.
Pick #3 - Golden State Warriors - Jerome Jordan - C - Tulsa
Why This Was a Good Pick
Jerome Jordan is a solid center prospect, standing at seven feet tall. He is a good rebounder and shot blocker, and isn't half bad on the offensive end either. Jordan, Anthony Randolph, and Andris Biedrins form a nice young front court for the Golden State.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
Jerome Jordan did not deserve to be taken at number four. He was predicted to be picked somewhere between 8-15, and because Thabeet was off the board it almost seems like the Warriors settled on Jordan.
Pick #4 - Sacramento Kings - Earl Clark - SF - Louisville
Why This Was a Good Pick
Earl Clark has the potential to be something special in the NBA. He has great height for a small forward at 6'9'', and his speed and ballhandling ability allow him to get to the basket past defenders. Clark also has an emerging jumpshot and with practice he could become a solid three-point shooter.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
There are no real negatives to this pick. Clark is a player on the rise and he should do good things for a Kings team in need of energy.
Pick #5 - Charlotte Bobcats - Terrence Williams - SF - Louisville
Why This Was a Good Pick
Williams is a spectacular energy player, one who can hit big shots and throw down the occasional slam. His scoring ability is solid and he is a great rebounder for his 6'5'' frame.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
The Bobcats were in more need of a center than they were of another swingman. Williams will be good for the city of Charlotte, but a player like Andrew Ogilvy would have been even better.
Pick #6 - Minnesota Timberwolves - Andrew Ogilvy - C - Vanderbilt
Why This Was a Good Pick
Ogilvy bolsters the Wolves' front court with Al Jefferson and Kevin Love. He won't start any time soon and he won't reach full potential until most likely a couple years, but he will rebound and defend well for Minnesota.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
The Timberwolves still lack a pure point guard, as they have been using Randy Foye in the backcourt. Many excellent point guard prospects were still on the board and it would have been a wiser choice for the Wolves to take one of them.
Pick #7 - Oklahoma City Thunder - James Harden - SG - Arizona State
Why This Was a Good Pick
Harden makes the Thunder one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league, teaming up with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green, and Rafer Alston. Harden is one of the most NBA-ready players in the draft and he will most likely put up solid rookie numbers.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
The last thing that the Thunder needed was another guard. There's still a void down low at the center spot, but you can't blame them because there weren't any center prospects worthy of a top ten pick left on the board.
Pick #8 - New York Knicks - Stephen Curry - SG - Davidson
Why This Was a Good Pick
Stephen Curry is a perfect fit for New York. He fits right in to coach Mike D'Antoni's run-n-gun, three-point shooting offense and he is one of the most popular college players in the nation. This means that the New York fans will flood Madison Square Garden to watch Curry play.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
There aren't any flaws with this pick. Curry will replace Marbury and lead the Knicks to success in a few short years.
Pick #9 - Indiana Pacers - Tyreke Evans - SG - Memphis
Why This Was a Good Pick
Tyreke Evans proved that he was one of the most mature players in college basketball, leading the Memphis Tigers to success as a freshman. The Pacers are a team that is in need of leadership, and Evans might be able to play a Derrick Rose-like role for Indiana this year.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
Once again, the Pacers were in more need of a big man prospect, but settled on a guard. Evans will be able to do great things for Indiana, but a nice power forward would be more logical.
Pick #10 - Washington Wizards - Brandon Jennings - PG - Italy
Why This Was a Good Pick
Jennings is a very explosive guard coming out of Italy. His potential is ridiculous and he has a chance to be great. The Washington system suits him perfectly as the Wizards like to run the floor. Jennings has the opportunity to jump right in to the starting spot over Mike James and Javaris Crittenton.
Why This Was a Bad Pick
Brandon Jennings has some big shoes to fill with the departure of Gilbert Arenas. If Jennings can't handle the pressure, this pick will be useless for Washington.
