This mistake has been made over and over again.

I think I had to send my ps1 in for repairs about 10 times before I ended up switching to PC gaming and don't get me started on the PS2 after launch.

Hell even the first nintendo is famous for having to blow dust out of the cartridge just to play the thing.

MS same thing. Rush 360 to market, offer it for 299 and 399 and laugh all the way to the bank.

Its the way of the consoles. If you don't offer a cheap one you get the PS3. The laughing stock of this gen for a good couple years because it was 499 and 599 when they first came out.

I don't think you can compare the NES issues with 360 problems. That's mostly just an issue with cartridges getting dirty and that stupid loading mechanism. NOt so much the console itself being completely faulty. As for the PS1, I had one and played the shit out of it. You went through ten? Really? Why even bother after more than two? And before you say "You're on your sixth 360" that's because I have still only paid for one. I also only had one PS2. Maybe I was lucky. I also only ever had one NES, one Genesis, and one TG-16.

I had the thing repaired a lot because there used to be a game store that was only a block away from my parents when I was a kid. Back then I remember only having to pay for a repair once because a lot of it was under sonys crazy 5 year or something warranty. I think we managed to kill the laser on it a hand full of times and then the lid wouldn't stay shut or some errors would show up on the screen. I'm not sure if we threw it out but I remember seeing all the repair stickers on it from when we would send it in and they would attach a claim number to it lol. A lot of my buddies had similar issues till they fixed a lot of them a lot later in its life. We only paid for 2 PS1's in its whole life span. The second one was bought a lot later because we wanted to have two of them.

I'm only on my second 360 and I still as of today have yet to actually pay for the console. I've been using my free 360 for over 5 years now lol.

The 360 is pretty much the point I'm making in that companies are making cheap consoles will sell a lot more. What screwed them was the price point was still way to low and they ended up losing a ton of money on just the hardware thanks to ol red ringer. This isn't a new idea though and won't be new when the next batch of consoles come out and some how have prices below $500.

I know this generation is already a total anomaly but I honestly think they should milk these consoles for three more years at least. It's all profit at this point. The economy sucks. People are still buying these console left and right. Why put yourself in a hole with new hardware, taking losses for the first few years of the cycle probably, that will probably only slightly improve on what we already have?

I disagree on the Nes/360. Its the same issue. 360s way of propping up the board was all skewed. They used a cheap part and a stupid design that didnt take into account real world heating issues and bam you have GPUs popping off the boards.
I dont recall any Colecos or Ataris having issues ((I was 6 believe me Id remember beezy)

NES was notorious for there issues but IIRC there were huge shortages and they were struggling to meet demands for a few years. Maybe that had something to do with design decisions ?

SNES/Dreamcast/Xbox 1 all rock solid. N64/Wii by all accounts super reliable.

Id have to look into it but perhaps there is something to rushing to the market.

Its going to be VERY interesting.
I think the slew of people gaming on tablets , internet App enabled tvs are going to make selling a 500$ console that much harder. HD was a huge selling point as that market was surging...Internet gaming was also beginning to surge.

Now ?
3D ? Angry Birds ? Motion control ? Voice interaction ? Home automation control ?
Whats your angle... Wii U looks uninspired in both design and implementation I cant imagine a 199-249$ price point for that hardware this time around.

None of these consoles are running Android or iOS so integration with your phone/tablet is out of the question.
MS may have some Win 8 uniformity but gaming consoles almost have to be proprietary for safety/malware concerns..so again..whats the angle ?

My game console needs to be the first thing I turn on or go to in order for me to justify the price and risk of console death at this point.


My issue with current gen isnt HW its repetitive uninspired sequels. What good is 4k graphics and hyper 3D if im just playing COD 7 mega modern warfare ?

I saw a concept video where they had a console in the same enclosure as a projector and It was about the size of a 360, probably a bit larger but the problem I see with that is the amount of heat produced by the projector.

My projector is in a 10x12 room and the room gets warmer when I'm running the projector. It really is like a mini heater and coupling that with a console is probably not a good idea.

Although, it would eliminate the need for a TV. So, does the risk outweigh the cost? I am not sure.

That shit never did anything. I had to push it all the way down and stack another cartridge or cassette tape cover on top. Then shift it to the side a bit.

What pissed me off is that some games had "batteries" and you had to reset + power to not lose data. So when the fuckin game would randomly start reboot cycle thered be a mad dash to the console.

I guess I had the unbreakable NES. That thing was a beast....even after fucking up the door with the Game Genie.

Yes the cartridge-on-cartridge action was vital after your NES was over 6 months old. I've never understood the basic design of the NES...with the game systems like the Atari, you'd just jam the cartridge into the input slot and that was that. Never had any problems. But with the NES, you had to slide the game in a box, and then shove down on some weak-ass springy shelf thing and hope the cartridge made it to its destination. Why? Then when the Sega Genesis came out after the NES, we were back to the Atari-style console, and I never had a problem with my Sega.

At least the cartridge-on-cartridge action gave me a use for this game...it was my "go to" stackable cartridge:

Next Xbox To Have No Disc Drive

The next Xbox won't contain a physical disc drive, according to a new report.

A source close to British trade magazine MCV claims that Microsoft revealed this information under what it described as "the strictest NDA" they have ever encountered.

While the console will not contain a disc drive, according to the source, the report suggests it will contain "some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD."
