NFL has too many rules: Nate Burleson TD catch

The fact that this was initially ruled an incompletion is mind-boggling. The fact that this was the second Lions TD catch initially ruled an incompletion (Pettigrew had an earlier TD catch that needed review) is even more mind-boggling.

I've never understood this "going to the ground" rule, because no one can explain what "going to the ground" means. Burleson is upright in the endzone and gets 3 feet in bounds. In the endzone, the only body part that is in contact with the ground is his feet. Stop with these stupid rules.

On a side note, Mike Carey used to be one of the best officials in the league, but now he is one of the worst. Too many penalties called, too many of those penalties being either completely phantom or completely irrelevant to the action on the field, too many officials conferences that consume 60-120 seconds before a call is actually made, too many TERRIBLE calls that aren't in the spirit of the rules. The Lions-Niners game was brutal to watch.

Yeah they reversed it and got it right, but what a joke, the lions had to use a challenging and shouldn't have had to. Seems to me anything close to a TD should be called a TD since they are reviewing all scoring plays, same thing happened in cowboys game welker was clearly in the endzone and ref marked him short, NE had use challenge for a no brainer obvious blown call.

I'll still point out that if the field goal netting wasn't there he wouldn't of put the ball on the ground. Its something I think was missed in the broadcast and no one was talking about.

If the netting wasn't there and he wasn't trying to jump over it this would of been a non issue.

That Calvin Johnson call was one of the worst calls in sports history.

Also want to point out that the Gore run at 1:22, the tackle was apparently a "horsecollar." They tacked on 15 for it.

the game as a whole had terrible officiating (but that is not why the lions lost, 49ers were just better) the phantom horse collar was some bullshit especially when javid was actually horse collard down and it was not called.

As a San Francisco fan I was shaking my head at that. Gore didn't even get pulled back. I get how they added the rule about grabbing and pulling high on a jersey to be included in a horse collar, but that wasn't even close. Gore was grabbed by the number/shoulder and he fell forward. Horrible call.

Phantom PI call in the Saints Bucs game on a 3rd and long. Flag comes out like 10 secs after the play which ultimately led to a NO TD. Refs have been awful vs us this season, luckily we've been decent enough to overcome the 12th man.

Taking points off the board is the ultimate slap in the face and would have been fucked had they not called Burlesons catch a TD, it was pretty much an identical situation regarding the Calvin Johnson fiasco last season.

An NFL spokesman has acknowledged an officiating error giving the San Francisco 49ers a head start on their winning touchdown drive against the Detroit Lions.

The error gave the 49ers possession at the Detroit 35-yard line after punt returner Ted Ginn Jr. had gone out of bounds at the 40 with 5:29 remaining in the game. The Lions held a 19-15 lead at the time, but the 49ers eventually went ahead with a 6-yard scoring pass on fourth-and-goal.

"The officiating crew incorrectly spotted the ball at the Detroit 35 instead of the 40 where Ted Ginn went out of bounds," the spokesman said in an email.
