NFL Replay "issues" in conference championship games

The game keeps getting faster, and the league keeps adding rules that make 60 year old officials process more information and think slower.

The game has become nearly impossible to officiate, and the league uses replay as the crutch.

I am surprised Tom Brady's kick slide to Ed Reed's knee isn't a bigger story. He should be fined for that.

Really guy? A leg that didn't hurt or touch Reed is a bigger of a story than a very controversial fumble with the Patriots driving to tie it up during the AFC Championship game?

I don't disagree with that, but the problem to me is that the NFL pushes safety safety safety, yet the heads of some players are deemed more important than the heads of others.

I agree.. I just know how that rule is supposed to work. Quite a few helmet to helmet hits from my team.

I watched that Ridley play a number of times and I never thought it wasn't a fumble. I didn't know that was "controversial" at all. The call on the field was a fumble, and like jms said, video has to be indisputable that it wasn't...I don't see anything on the replays that indisputably says it wasn't a fumble. It's close. I think if the call on the field was down by contact, it would have stayed down by contact.

I agree. I don't even understand the why behind it.

I thought it was like Reggie Miller leaving his arm extended for 3 seconds after shooting, hoping that at some point contact is made and Miller can crumple to the ground and get a foul call.

I don't know how Baltimore was allowed to put their offensive line in the old flying wedge "V" formation. I thought the OLinemen had to be level with the Center's back foot.

At the 5-6 second mark is when the ball starts to come loose. Is he down yet? From that view it's hard to tell, but I think not. Definition of a bang-bang play I suppose.

Yeah I was jumping up and down just like Harbaugh when that was ruled a catch in the Niners game, and my mind went back just like yours to that Calvin Johnson ruling. The replay clearly showed that Douglas did not "complete the process of the catch". Still baffles me.

I actually don't think this is a bad idea I just wonder how feasible it would be to implement. If the replay booth inside the stadium can sometimes be too late in calling for a review when a team runs to the line to snap the ball after a questionable play, I wonder how much more often this would occur if the call for the review came from a proxy location.

Simple answer. Still have replay officials, still have coach challenges. But when a play is reviewed, instead of going to blind referee who has an incentive to say his call is right, send it to New York to the league offices.

I think officials are in a tough position as it is.

We as fans are able to see these replays in slow motion, and see very specific details and happenings of what transpired during said play. Most of the stuff we see on these CBS/FOX replays that are in slow motion are things we would normally miss while watching the replay in real time.

If I'm correct, Referees can only watch the replays in real time. So you can understand how that affects some of their play calls. The Harry Douglas catch was ruled a catch on the field, if you watch it in slow motion you can see the ball move slightly, but if you're watching that in real time do you see that? Even more so with the Ridley fumble. The call on the field was fumble, and watching that in real time probably doesn't give indisputible evidence that it wasn't a fumble.

I can understand these days why some referees seem to make bonehead calls. That said though, sometimes the refs can really make you scratch your head. The Polomalu int was just one screw up in a long game of screwups by Pete Morelli, who imo is probably the worst referee in this league. I've watched his incompetence shatter two NFL teams chances for a championship (Indianapolis 2004-05, Minnessota 2008-09).

If he wasn't relating the two than it wouldn't be in this thread because it has nothing to do with the topic. This thread is clearly about NFL replay issues not Tom Brady's bitch move.
