No RB is going to do well in our offense because our oline sucks so bad. We need to replace 2, arguably the positions, and they are all along the interior.
I think drafting Spiller, or any other RB is conceding that Moreno isn't the answer. I wasn't impressed with Moreno, but you can't get a gauge on him because our oline is so bad. Adrian Peterson would be garbage behind our oline.
Look at our offense.
Marshall has said to be wanting the biggest contract in the game. If Denver can't sign him we could lose him, and wil probably will lose Scheffler.
Nex year, it's concievable to think that our offense could be Kyle Orton, an oline with great T's, and a garbage/young/inexperienced interior. RB's wouldn't change much. WR's would be Royal, Gaffney, Stokley, and who? We could possibly have the worst offense in the NFL next year.
We need players. A RB isn't going to change anything. It's the one position that is completely dependant on the rest of the offense.
IMHO, RB is the one position you stay away from in the first round. Short shelf life, is only as good as the oline (with exceptions), and you can't center an offense around it unless you have pieces.
Indianapolis has done things the right way, by making sure the offense has what it needs, and then going RB. I wish Denver would approach that same philosophy.
Our interior oline is bad, that's obvious. But you can't fix that with the ~10th overall pick unless you trade down. If we can't trade down we're best off drafting a guy like CJ Spiller.
Spiller will never be a typical NFL RB, he'll never run between the tackles. However Spiller can still provide an explosive presence on an NFL offense and special teams. He can run to the outside, something that Moreno has been to slow to do this year. I'm not ready to give up on Moreno, but he has been just as terrible as the oline he's running behind this year. Spiller can do some things very well, that Moreno simply can't, and that would help the team a lot.
As far as not being able to sign Marshall...We'd almost certainly sign him to the highest tender (he's a restricted free agent), forcing a team to give us a first and third for him. That would make Dez Bryant the obvious choice with the ~10th pick.
