Former Buckeye Vernon Gholston heading back to Ohio

On the eve of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets have made a major deal which affects the top 6 picks in the draft, set to commence tomorrow evening. The Bengals will send the #1 overall pick to the Jets in exchange for the 6th overall selection, the Jets' 2010 2nd round selection (38th overall), and former first round pick LB Vernon Gholston (74 overall). Gholston, going into his third year after being picked #6 overall by the Jets in 2008, has been a major disappointment since leaving Ohio State.

In his rookie season, he registered just 9 tackles and last season, despite being healthy for all 16 games, could only manage 10 tackles while playing special teams as a reserve behind Jets OLB Bryan Thomas (75 overall). This coming after Gholston registered a school-record 14.5 sacks in his final year with the Buckeyes.

The Bengals, according to sources, have been shopping the #1 overall pick for several weeks now in an effort to slide down to avoid paying the hefty price tag that the pick entails. Now at the 6th slot, the price tag decreases considerably which should help the Bengals cap situation and allow them to sign all of their picks.

"We're very excited about today's move and we're even more excited to add a player of Vernon's ability to our roster," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy.

"For one reason or another, things just have not worked out for Vernon in New York. We have a specific role in mind for him here however and we think his speed will do wonders both as an edge rush outside linebacker in a 3-4 or even as a 4-3 defensive end.

"The #1 pick is a gift and a curse unfortunately and the value of the pick has gone down considerably from previous years. However after extensive shopping around, we felt we got the best value that we could for the pick."

Gholston, a Detroit, Michigan native, is expected to start at outside linebacker for the Bengals. The 6-3 266 pounder ran a 4.5 40-yard dash at the 2008 combine and saw his draft stock sky-rocket. However many believe that his fast rise due to those numbers ended up resulting in him becoming a major "reach" according to many draft analysts. Geezy does not believe that it is time label Gholston a bust just yet.

"Vernon is going to come here and be a major contributor to an up-and-coming ball club. Hopefully tomorrow evening we can continue to put pieces around him and get this defense and this team to the next level."

The 2010 NFL Draft kicks off tomorrow evening with round 1. Things have certainly gotten interesting for Bengals fans and for Jets fans, especially those that will be in attendance Thursday night at Radio City Music Hall.

Add in their current salary cap status and the fact that all areas of the team could improve and the Bengals can turn their number one pick into a solid veteran and later first round pick and an additional second round pick - depending on how far they drop down.

I really like the deal that you made. You didn't drop down too far in the first and you now have three picks in the 2nd round! You can definitely make some strides in getting this team back to a competitive level.

It was hard finding a fair deal for the #1 pick. I thought for sure SF would trade me 4 and 20 for the first pick but they had no interest. Then I thought Seattle would do 9 and 14, no mas.

The best "draft pick only" deal I could find was with the Colts, who would do their first, second, and fourth for my #1 which is steal a bad deal according to the NFL trade value chart.

In the end, I decided that I would do something involving a player and tried to find the best, realistic scenario out there.

Jets| WR Williams to be picked #1 overall

ESPN's Adam Shefter reports that the New York Jets, who on Wednesday traded with the Cincinnati Bengals for the #1 overall pick in the draft, have reached a contract agreement and will select USC WR Damian Williams tonight with its pick. Williams, 6-1 190 pounds, saw his stock skyrocket during February's combine after running a 4.31 40-yard dash. The former Trojan caught 87 passes for 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns in his final year in Los Angeles & immediately becomes Jets quarterback and former Trojan Mark Sanchez's top target. According sources, Sanchez's influence played a heavy role in the Jets' decision to make Williams the top pick in the draft and bolster their receiving core.

BENGALS GRAB USC'S TAYLOR MAYS IN ROUND 1

Hard-hitting safety expected to come in and immediately change the face of the Cincinnati defense​

With their first pick in the draft the Cincinnati Bengals selected USC safety Taylor Mays. Mays, at 6-3 230 pounds, is expected to immediately become the team's starter at free safety over incumbent starter Chris Crocker. Mays' size/speed combination was too much for Bengals G.M. D.Geezy to overlook.

"This was the #1 guy on our board and there really was no hesitation in making him our pick when we saw he was there," said Geezy.

"He is such a versatile player and is equally stout against the run as he is against the pass. He is just the latest player for us to acquire this off-season that can do several things on the football field. He'll come in, learn the new defense we're installing, and be a defensive centerpiece for years to come."

Mays will join former Trojans and current Bengals, MLB Rey Maualuga and OLB Keith Rivers in Cincinnati's suddenly menacing back-seven.

"I'm coming into a situation that I like. I feel like this defense is a piece or two away from greatness. Coach Martz and the G.M. D.Geezy both spent a lot of time with me from the get-go as did Romeo Crennel. We all feel like I can come in and help turn around the defense."

BENGALS TRADE BACK INTO ROUND 1 TO SELECT CB JOE HADEN

Florida CB brings speed, man-to-man cover skills to Cincinnati​

The Cincinnati Bengals pulled off an unexpected draft day trade, trading two of their three 2nd round picks to the Detroit Lions for the 15th overall selection in the draft to select Florida CB Joe Haden. The Bengals sent the 33rd overall pick and the 38th overall pick to Detroit in exchange for the 15th overall pick and the Lions' fifth round pick (143rd overall). Haden, considered the draft's top cornerback, joins USC FS Taylor Mays in the Bengals' defensive secondary.

"We definitely did not expect Joe to get out of the top 10 and when he did we began working the phones as early as pick 12," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy.

"With each pick that went by we realized things were becoming more and more realistic for our chances. I have no problem stating that we had a deal worked out with another team at a later slot for another player that surprisingly went ahead of Joe but we did not expect Haden to be there. Joe will come in and immediately compete for a spot in our secondary and I think he'll end up one of the better players from this draft. His skill set is amazing."

Haden, 5-11 190 pounds with 4.34 speed, figures to be in the mix at cornerback with Pro Bowl CB Leon Hall (81 overall) and the team's other starter, Jonathan Joseph (77 overall), who is going into a contract year.

"Joe was the #2 guy on our board and we did not think we'd have any shot at him. This really was a surprising coup for us." said Geezy.

"Aw man...I never thought I would play with a player like Mays. I'm excited about what we can bring to the table as a secondary next year. Heads are gonna roll."

BENGALS SELECT DYNAMIC RETURN MAN ARENAS IN ROUND 2

Arenas expected to compete for nickel back duty while electrifying the Bengals' return units​

The Cincinnati Bengals made another move aimed at improving their secondary while possibly upgrading their special teams return units, drafting Alabama CB Javier Arenas in round 2 of the NFL draft, the 52nd overall pick. Arenas, 5-9 193 pounds, runs a 4.3 40 and is best known for his spectacular return abilities. His six return touchdowns going into his senior season was already a school-record and he added to that number this past fall, returning another 3 for scores.

"Javier reminds me so much of (Bears WR) Devin Hester with his vision, speed, and acceleration," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy.

"I felt like we struggled a bit last year in that area, in particular on punt returns, and I think this will obviously help our offense improve in regards to field position."

Though known more for his return abilities, Arenas is also a top-notch cornerback and was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. Arenas is expected to compete for nickel back duties along with 1st round pick Joe Haden in the Bengals' suddenly new-look secondary.

"It's obvious that we identified our secondary as an area of need," said Geezy.

"We ranked dead last in pass defense last year and gave up far too many big plays as well as a record number of point allowed. We've succeeded in our plan for day 1 of the draft and we're excited."

"I know I am known as a return man in most quarters but I want to make it clear that the Bengals are getting a good cornerback first and foremost. I know they picked Taylor Mays out of USC and also Joe Haden so I look forward to working with them and the rest of the guys in the secondary & get this team back to the playoffs. "

That actually was not by design. The plan going into the day was to trade a similar package to Philadelphia at 17 to grab the guard Eric Olsen. He is a beast (mid-90 ratings in STR, PBK, and RBK according to my scouts).

When Cleveland grabbed him, I noticed that my #2 guy was still available and I had to make a move.

I didn't think there was a chance in hell that I would have a shot at Haden. Like I said, I had a plan in place to trade up to the mid first round for another player but once it became apparent that the draft's best corner was falling, I had to go get him.

If this class turns out like the 95 Bucs class, we are gonna be pretty well set on that side of the ball.
