Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Cincinnati Bengals have released OLB Matt Wilhelm (62 overall) from the team on the final day to cut down their roster to the 48-man maximum. Wilhelm, who was signed during the unrestricted free agent signing period, was unable to beat out reserve linebackers Blake Costanzo (62 overall) and John Digiorgio (71 overall) during the preseason. The Bengals will keep just six active linebackers on their active roster at this stage of the season. "We wanted to hold onto an extra receiver this year so we had to sacrifice at another area and for now, we've decided that the area is at reserve linebacker," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy. "We've been cross-training DE Michael Johnson at the SAM in the case of an emergency and he may also see time as a rush linebacker when we go with our 3-4 looks."

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have released DT Jason Jefferson (57 overall) from the team on the final day to cut down their roster to the 48-man maximum. Jefferson failed to beat out Bengals 5th round draft choice Boo Robinson (58 overall) for a reserve defensive tackle position.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have released RB Brian Leonard (65 overall) from the team on the final day to cut down their roster to the 48-man maximum. "This was the toughest decision for us on cut down day," said Bengals G.M. D.Geezy. "Brian is a heck of a player and a very versatile player who we hated to release but he just got caught up in a numbers game. We like Brian because he can play both running back and full back but in the end we decided that we have a guy in TE Brandon Manumaleuna who could fill-in at fullback if needed as well. Brian will be on our speed dial though in case one of the other backs go down."

Bengals | CB Trent released

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals have released CB Morgan Trent (63 overall) from the team on the final day to cut down their roster to the 48-man maximum. Trent's chances of making the team were slim following the selection of cornerbacks Joe Haden and Javier Arenas during the 2010 NFL Draft. The former Michigan Wolverine had 39 tackles, 6 sacks, and an interception last season serving as the team's nickle back. The Bengals, like last season, will carry four cornerbacks on their final 48 man roster.

Yep...I was going to roll with 2 tight ends since Martz doesn't really utilize tight ends much but I couldn't cut Moya after all the big plays he made during the preseason.

Basically to keep Leonard, it's either cut a tight end, cut a receiver, or cut another RB. Can't do any of those at this point.

Bengals | J. Palmer named back-up QB

Updating previous reports, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that QB Jordan Palmer (58 overall) has won the team's back-up quarterback position battle over J.T. O'Sullivan (58 overall). Palmer, the younger brother of Bengals starting QB Carson Palmer, threw for 440 yards and two touchdowns during the preseason and posted an 82.1 passer rating. O'Sullivan, who had a strong finish to the preseason, had a 71.2 rating while throwing for 376 yards.

Updating previous reports, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Cincinnati Bengals plan to use all 3 of their running backs during their season opening contest versus New Orleans. RB Bernard Scott (69 overall) and RB Jerome Harrison (73 overall) will split most of the carries while rookie third round draft choice C.J. Spiller (72 overall) will be used moreso in a third down back role and in passing situations.

Updating previous reports, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals rookie 2nd round draft choice CB Javier Arenas (99 RET rating) will handle the team's kick returns going into this season and rookie 6th round draft pick WR Jacoby Ford (99 RET rating) will return punts. Arenas had a 25.5 kick return average compared to Ford's 20.7 average while Ford's 10.4 punt return average bested Arenas' 2.6 average. The team may also expirement with 3rd round pick C.J. Spiller (99 RET rating) as a punt returner as he has taken practice reps at the position during the past two weeks.

Bengals | McDonald wins battle but...

Updating previous reports, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals WR Brandon London (68 overall) will remain the team's starter opposite Ochocinco despite being outplayed by WR Shaun McDonald (71 overall) during the preseason. The team believes that McDonald was best when used in a #3 receiver role and does not want to disturb the chemistry built between he and QB Carson Palmer. McDonald led all Bengals receivers with 21 receptions for 258 yards during the preseason.

Updating previous reports, Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Bengals will employ a heavy rotation at defensive end as they implement their new "Multiple front" scheme under new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Defensive ends Michael Johnson (77 overall) and Robert Geathers (77 overall) will see most of the snaps when the team lines up with 4 down linemen. 300+ pound defensive ends Justin Bannan (74 overall) and Dwan Edwards (71 overall) will see the bulk of the plays when the team lines up in the 3-4. Bannan will also see time at defensive tackle.

Williams, last year's starter, graded out higher during the preseason according to sources close to the team.

Count me as another shocked reader to see Leonard go as well. Granted, I get it that its a numbers game, but, I was just shocked to see him go after last season. The move makes sense though. With Scott, Harrison and Spiller - Leonard would just be taking up a roster spot. I don't think it would be likely that he would even see the field much.

I'm looking forward to you defensive line rotation. You really have some big guys that you can put up there. I think, at the very least, you will see a big improvement in your play against the rush.

McDonald may have impressed in the preseason, but I like that you are keeping him in the slot role. He has so much speed and the routes for the slot receiver in the Saints playbook are really probably a better fit. His athleticism and speed should help him get seperation from the CPU corner. You have a nice receiving trio going into the season. I think its possible that all three of them could have between 50-60 catches each if the ball is spread out.

Yeah I just could not let Moya go after the preseason he's had. Though he is rated only 58 with C potential, he could end up rated in the low to mid 70s which in this game is a pretty serviceable player. And with his 85 speed, he is one of the fastest tight ends in the game.

Leonard would have never seen the field and one thing I have learned while during this franchise and having a somewhat true to life active roster rule...Every body you can dress is valuable and there can not be a single wasted roster spot.

Moya will be the 3rd tight end, see the field on some passing downs, and be the long snapper.

I'm very excited about the receiving core. I think McDonald could be a real sleeper. It looked just like ol times between him and Martz during the preseason. Can't wait to start the season tonight!

The new-look Cincinnati Bengals offense got off to a fast start to open the season as the team defeated the New Orleans Saints 38-31 on NFL Opening Weekend. Bengals QB Carson Palmer looked as sharp as ever in new Bengals head coach Mike Martz's offense, going 26 of 33 for 359 yards and three touchdowns, easily Palmer's best performance over the past two seasons. Bengals rookie third round pick RB C.J. Spiller also had a terrific day, carrying the football for 75 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner from 1-yard away with 0:25 to go in the game.

The Bengals were put into position to score the game-winning touchdown following a 65-yard strike from Palmer to WR Shaun McDonald in which the 7th year receiver took all the way down to the New Orleans 1-yard line before being tackled. McDonald finished the day with 119 receiving yards on 5 receptions.

The Saints (0-1) were without RB Reggie Bush for most of the afternoon as the 5th year player from USC suffered a rib injury in the first quarter and was unable to return. Bush had gashed the Bengals for 220 rushing yards when the two teams met during the preseason. Still, the Saints' offense moved the ball with ease via the arm of QB Drew Brees, who matched Palmer's productivity with 359 passing yards of his own to go along with his four touchdown passes.

Brees would get one last chance to lead his team to a game-tying touchdown, but his hail mary attempt fell incomplete in the endzone, giving Cincinnati their first opening day win since 2007.

The Bengals (1-0) will host Baltimore (0-1) next week at home. The Ravens fell to the New England Patriots 21-14 in week one at Gillette Stadium.

Note: After starting the 2009 season 0-14, the Cincinnati Bengals have now won 3 consecutive regular season games...Bengals rookie FS Taylor Mays left the game in the first quarter with a sprained knee and missed the remainder of the contest however head coach Mike Martz stated in his post game presser that the former USC Trojan will be fine for next week's game.

He was a surprise. Especially on the long 47-yard TD run. He hadn't shown he could do that in the preseason. Impressive start for him.

Spiller really looks nice. Carson Palmer also looked good finally. Maybe the playbook change and Martz's tutelage is all he needed.
