Chillar was TT's lone FA pickup last year and was on the roster and was brought in before Barnett's injury. IIRC, he was brought in because Hawk was such a liability in pass coverage. I thought he had more bad games than good but he did have occasional flashes of athleticism.

Chillar was our best coverage LB last year and yeah he was definitely brought in LONG before Barnett got injured. (he's not even a 4-3 MLB)He's not 'just a body.' he was looking like he was going to win the starting SOLB job in training camp last year before Poppinga really stepped up and separated himself.

I'm not saying he's awesome, but he's a pretty good cover-LB that typically saw a lot of playing time in nickel defense and against teams who had good receiving TEs. He's something that the team really lacked in 2007.

The only thing Chillar has going for him in pass coverage is his height. He is not athletic, he evidently was very confused by the Packers cover schemes in that he had no idea where his help was coming from, and he is absolutely horrendous in man-to-man coverage.

Do you actually watch the games, or do you just like to naysay? We are talking about the same guy, right? The guy who got cut from the worst defensive team in the NFL (Rams)?

Well, when arguably your best defensive player (Barnett) in midseason, I don't think its an easy task to replace the guy. I'm just hoping that Chillar doesn't see as much of the field this year, but other people are making him out to be the second coming of Jack Lambert. I don't see how anyone could blame the GM for acquiring Chillar...its just that he's not very good and didn't play all that well last year.

I was at the Packers- Saints game.

And I don't really like to use that as a good measuring stick considering the Saints diced up most every team with their passing attack. Brees passed for over 5,000 yards. We were one of the teams that got destroyed by Brees on those WRs, it's not that big of a deal.

The Packers loss to the Saints was a huge deal, because at that time the Packers were 5-5 and coming off of a monster win over the Bears. That Saints loss put the Packers into a 5-game tailspin that ended their playoff hopes.

You make no sense I'm sorry. I'm just having a hard time with you saying Chillar is one of the worst pass coverage linebackers. How can he be the worst when he is situationally put in on passing downs. I'm no Mike McCarthy, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he was the Pack's best option.

One game makes or breaks a player I guess to some. Chillar is no where near being an all-star in the league; I have never came close to saying that. Is he an average player in the league? I would say most definitely.

What on earth are you talking about? Chillar was far below average as a starter for the Rams, and he was awful during his short starting stint with Green Bay. The Rams cut him last year, and the Packers picked him up during the season. You must be making this stuff up, because its not like the Packers went out of their way to acquire Chillar. They needed a body at LB after Barnett got hurt, so they signed Chillar because he's better than corpse.

He is terrible in coverage. Look at his stat line against the Saints this year, a game in which Chillar single-handedly made Drew Brees a 5000-yard passer. He had 0 INTs, 0 passes defensed, and 10 solo tackles! Meaning he managed to tackle the receiver 10 times after he caught it.

At New Orleans (Nov. 24): Started at WLB and led the team with 10 tackles, including his first sack as a Packer when he brought down Drew Brees for a 5-yard loss in third quarter. Also made a big hit on WR Lance Moore on his pass attempt in third quarter that was intercepted by S Aaron Rouse

Those are the big things I'm referring to. Players do things that dont show up on that stat sheet. Those are big things to me.

I could be wrong, but I thought GB picked up Chillar well before Barnett got hurt. Right or wrong, it doesn't change that fact that our LB's and Safety's couldn't cover a TE.

Barnett was hurt in Week 10 I believe? So yeah, training camp is LOONG before the injury I would say. Chillar was signed before training camp.

Bigby played like shit, I just watched the highlight where Lance Moore caught the ball in front of him, then ran right past for a score. Rodgers threw 3 INTs, Pierre Thomas scored twice, Deuce once, Lance Moore Shredded the secondary...Chillar was not responsible for that game.

Notes from his 09 outlook:

-Led the team’s linebackers with nine passes defensed, more than double his career total coming into the season, and ranked fourth on the team with 13 special teams tackles in his first season in Green Bay
-Could potentially play outside linebacker or inside in the sub packages of the defense’s new 3-4 scheme, where he’ll look to utilize his coverage and blitz skills

I think you're associating the bad 08 season, and being cut from a bad team defensively, with Chillar a tad too much.

In no way did I, and I'm sure ShimSham as well, say that Chillar was top tier, best coverage backer in the league.

Yes, silly me. I am associating Chillar with playing poorly for the Packers and getting cut from a bad defensive team (Rams). It would make more sense for me to associate Chillar with "Notes from his 09 outlook" and ignore his miserable game against the Saints because of a sack and a 'big hit'.

This is one of the few times that I've been rendered speechless in a discussion about football...you actually brought up the Saints game as a point in Chillar's favor...as if giving up 51 points and 8 yards per play is somehow a mere footnote to the "big things you are referring to" when Chillar sacked Brees after getting burned by Jeremy Shockey for 14 yards the previous play, or when Chillar's hit caused an INT with the score 38-21 New Orleans in the 3rd period.

I've never claimed that anyone said Chillar is a top tier, best coverage LB in the NFL. I have no idea what you are talking about, nor do I have any idea how your comment somehow supports your claim that Chillar "did big things" in the New Orleans game.

I'll enjoy my Packer season. You can continue to "try" to make it seem as though we are relying on a single player to be the only provider of pass coverage.
