It's crazy to think about the differences between the 2010 and this Giants team yet they both made the World Series.

Bruce Bochy and Sabean deserve so much credit. I really don't know how anyone could root against this team:

Buster Posey comes back after a brutal injury that forces him to miss an entire season

Brian Wilson gets hurt early on and is lost for the season

Melky Cabrera gets popped for steroids

Tim Lincecum has his worst season as a pro

Barry Zito has his best season as a Giant

Marco Scutaro turns into the best player in the league (half joking but seriously wtf has gotten into him?)

Come back to win 3 straight in the NLDS and NLCS

Seriously, what a season for the Giants. Regardless of what happens against Detroit. Just making it back to the World Series so soon is so awesome. I truly feel spoiled and lucky to have watched this team play baseball over the last few years.

When the Giants and Niners are winning, you can just tell that people are happier and in a better mood overall out here. More people go out, more money is spent, more parties are being thrown. It's kinda crazy when you think about it. Sports has an incredible affect on people.

I thought Matheny pulled Lohse way too early. I haven't followed the Cards, but the reliever they brought in was terrible. Every count he'd get behind 3-0, yet Matheny left that idiot in until the game was out of reach. I don't get it. I felt bad for the Cardinals SS, because the reverse spin on the ball was pretty intense, but that doesn't really explain what the Cardinals OFs were doing behind the play. I'm guessing I have a stronger arm than John Jay, too.

I thought the Giants "won" the series when they won Zito's start in Game 5. That was really the Cards best opportunity to wrap up the series.

Matheny should have brought in Trevor Rosenthal in that spot. Joe Kelly (the reliever you're talking about) had done some nice things this season and will only get better, but in that spot you need strikeouts moreso than a chance at a double play. Rosenthal hasn't been touched this post-season (and even struck out the side in his first inning of work last night, albeit when the game was out of hand) and was the best bet to get out of that jam.

Jon Jay didn't have a good series at all. You already documented his weak throwing arm, but he also only had a .289 OBP as the lead-off guy. Granted, the middle of the line-up didn't produce much either (Allen Craig was pretty bad as well), but you'd think a consistent .300 hitter could set the table for your big bats more than that.

All in all, it's been a good year. One win away from the WS (despite the collapse) with a rookie manager and all the various injuries to major contributors is a pretty successful one. Some things need shored up (middle infield, possibility of Garcia being on the shelf for part of 2013, RH bats off the bench, Matheny's tactics) but it shouldn't be much of a surprise if the Cards are back here next season.

This doesn't really have much to do with anything, but I find it interesting that guys like Matheny and Robin Ventura had no managerial experience, were made managers anyways, were spoken of as "Managers of the Year", and then ended their seasons in ignomious fashion. Do you think having and experienced manager would have helped either the White Sox or the Cards? Or was it just the 'law of averages' catching up with them?

I think it would have helped in spots in the post-season (a lot moreso in the regular season however, the Cards under-performed their pythag by 5 games, only team in the NL playoffs to do so), but the bats have to show up against guys like Zito and Vogelsong to have a chance. That's not on the manager, even if he left a pitcher or two in the game for too long.
