Official 2009 NBA Free Agency Thread?

The Cavaliers are on the move in NBA free agency.

Team General Manager Danny Ferry and head coach Mike Brown flew to Los Angeles Sunday for a clandestine free-agent meeting. Team officials refused to confirm who they're hoping to sign, but the Cavs obviously are trying to land one of their free-agent targets as the market heats up again following the July 4 holiday.

Dan Fegan, the agent who represents both Cavs forward Anderson Varejao and Toronto forward Shawn Marion, is based in Los Angeles and often conducts in-person negotiating sessions there. Fegan did not return messages on Sunday. A league source said the Cavs did not meet with Marion in person on Sunday.

The Cavs have been in talks with Fegan about a new contract for Varejao, who opted out of his deal with the team last week.

It is also possible the Cavs were meeting with restricted free-agent wing Josh Childress, who lives in the Los Angeles area in the off-season. The 6-8 veteran who is known for being an intelligent player and good defender played last season in Greece after rejecting an offer from the Atlanta Hawks. He's averaged 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds for his career.

The Hawks still have matching rights on Childress, but they have several of their own free agents they are in talks to retain and may not be willing to match an offer sheet. Childress still has two years left on his contract in Greece but has an opt-out clause and is considering returning to the NBA, having met with the Milwaukee Bucks last week.

I think they need to look at adding Marion and/or Childress. Andy V would be nice but right now Marion and Childress are more pressing needs.

Apparently the Jazz are looking into signing Big Bay Davis to an offer sheet if Millsap ends up getting away, which it appears he will. They're looking to move forward without Boozer.
 
Heat in Odom's future?

Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who improved on his offer of $8 million a season to Lamar Odom, is getting frustrated and is thinking about pulling the deal off the table soon. Odom was asked whether it was true the Miami Heat had made him an offer. The Heat has only the midlevel exception of $5.8 million but might be willing to give Odom a five-year, $34-million deal. Miami signed Odom to a five-year, $65-million contract in 2003 before trading him to the Lakers in 2004 in a deal involving Shaquille O'Neal. "I don't know how to answer that question," Odom said about Miami being a suitor. "I'm pretty sure there might be other teams. I just won a championship."

Could Big Ben Return To Detroit?

The Pistons are expected to explore the possibility of bringing Ben Wallace back to Detroit.

They are in need of a relatively inexpensive big man, and Wallace just had his lucrative contract bought out by the Suns.

Detroit has $3.5 million left to spend on free agents.

Glen Davis is an option as well, but the Pistons are worried about his restricted free agent status.

May Thinks He's A Good Fit For Portland

The Trail Blazers worked out free-agent forward Sean May on Tuesday at a UNLV campus practice court.

May plans to work out for the Blazers, Kings, Clippers and Cavaliers by the time the week is over.

Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard said that the 6-foot-9 forward "did a nice job" during the workout.

Pritchard added that May shouldn't be viewed as a fallback plan in the event the Blazers miss out on Paul Millsap.

"Don't read anything into that," he said. "We just want to take a look at a lot of guys. That's what summer league's for; that's what the summer's about. Nate and I have always wanted to take a look at as many guys as we can."

May, meanwhile, believes that Portland would be a good fit.

"Both workouts went really well," he said. "Portland was really good and I like their staff a lot. I think they like me. I think they can see it fitting. Right now, I'm fighting for my career, to get my career back on track. I think they notice that. I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel great, I move great, the workout went well and I shot the ball well. I think they like that."
