Good signing by Baltimore. Hopefully Williams will be hungry for a ring and he should be great in short bursts to spell Ray Rice.

Based on what I saw Saturday, it doesn't matter who the Ravens sign if they don't get Matt Birk back to play come Week 1. The backup C's that we have are so far beyond horrible it's not even funny. Flacco is going to get hurt if Birk ends up not being able to play against Pitt.

Other observations:

Dickson didn't practice, Pitta was able to get open but dropped almost every pass thrown to him, Davon Drew was the only TE who stood out.

Torrey Smith looks real good. Doss didn't have the greatest day but you can see why he's getting the praise he is. The UDFA WR they got from MD looked good too, I forget his name, though. Laquan or something?

Optimal offensive line has Jah Reid at RT. Cousins has not improved at all, Suggs, Kindle, Johnson, etc, all made him their bitch.

Kindle looks good. Seems like he has some great explosion and good speed. Honestly, looked like we were all hoping he would last year. Hope it translates to real game. Everything is set up for him to be successful, with Cody and Ngata inside and Suggs opposite him, he'll never see a double team. I would say he is one of the key players this year.

The CBs were not impressive other than Cary Williams who had a couple interceptions. Foxworth looked bad, he didn't seem hesitant but he definitely seemed slower, getting beat a few times. It could just be that it was practice & he wasn't going full speed, though. Jimmy Smith didn't practice. Carr and Webb, didn't notice anything good or bad about them. About the same as usual. I feel those two should probably be your starters Week 1.

The defense as a group looked good and were definitely bringing the heat that we haven't seen the past two years. They did some of those old Rex-style setups where they only had one or no down linemen. I think it's safe to expect big things from the defensive group especially if the younger players like Cody, Jones, and Kindle step up.

They will have to be good, because I don't think the offense is going to be very good, at least not early on.

I guess we will see some in the preseason.

Eagles/Ravens tomorrow, with a replay on NFL Network at 11pm. What are you guys most likely looking for? Jimmy Smith and Ricky Williams won't be playing in that game.

- I want to see how Tyrod Taylor does as (heaven forbid) Joe goes down, we need someone who will step up.

- Sergio Kindle may not get tons of playing time, but I would like to see him against the Eagles starting O-line.

- Would like to see Torrie and Tandon at work.

So after preseason game #1 I will say our offense doesn't look bad at all. Our Tightend (pitta specifically) played very well. Flacco was shreading the eagles pretty good with that bum ass O-line.

I don't know what happened, but our offensive line play has fallen off. We allowed 6 (I think) sacks and it was mostly due to our tackles. Can't have that when week 1 comes around.

My personal Depth chart will change a lot from here till game 1, but here is what I believe is our optimal offense and defense.

Matt Birk is still out, correct? If so, that could be a problem and why you gave up as much as you did. Birk's still an above average center, but he's probably the best center in the league at reading fronts and helping make adjustments for the other linemen.

We must have watched different games. I thought that Pitta looked pretty decent and he's someone I'm keeping an eye on as a fantasy sleeper. Torrey Smith on the other hand was shit. The team immediately trading for Lee Evans after the game should tell you exactly what the coaches thought of Smith's & Doss' performances.

Joe was talking about Saturdays live practice last week. You are referring to the Thursday preseason game.

Not very good tackle combination (in terms of pass blocking) at all for the Ravens. Michael Oher definitely belongs at RT. And when you play the Steelers you're gonna need your pass protection tight.

I might have to kill myself if Harbaugh trots Torrey Smith out there instead of Tandon Doss as the #3 again. Smith needs a lot of work...a lot. Doss has looked great. Smith would have to be considered the #6 WR on the squad at this point...after Doss, Reed, and even LaQuan Williams...who I think will make the team...what more could he do to show he belongs on the roster?

Offensive line is still offensive but the signing of McKinnie, the move of Oher back to RT, Yanda and Birk coming back, should help that.

Smith is really something to watch in person. He's so big and physical, but so fast too, once he really understands the defense he's going to be a beast.

After seeing the guys put it on the line to make the team, here is a few non-obvious players that I think should make it.

Anthony Allen - 3rd string
Damien Berry - Practice Squad
Hunter Cantwell - Practice Squad
Chykie Brown - Practice Squad
Pernell McPhee - 3rd String
Michael Macadoo - 3rd String (kinda small for his height... 6'7", 245lbs)

I think McPhee will be well above third string sooner rather than later. That guy is a beast, he's destroyed everyone that has tried to block him, I can't recall another Raven ever having the kind of preseason he has had, truly a man among boys playing against the backups. Be interesting to see what he does against starters.

BTW Ravens beat reporter is reporting that LaQuan Williams HAS made the team and is already a part of the game plan for the Steelers game. So no more wondering about that one.

Parmele and Gooden have been cut as well. Was some talk of trading Gooden but nothing came of it. Gooden and Burgess being cut likely opens a spot for Phillips to stick, or a guy like McClellan, Bynes, or McAdoo to stay on the 53 vs being exposed.

Our new defense (under Pagano) looked DOMINATE.

Only downfall of todays game was Jimmy Smith leaving with a ankle injury and not returning. Hopefully he just twisted it or something.

Webb was great though. At one point they were playing with only 3 CBs, one of which the gimped Foxworth, and Steelers still couldn't do anything. Fantastic depth.

And that pass rush is nuts. Suggs and Ngata...jesus christ.
