The Redskins will hold Clinton Portis, Santana Moss and Albert Haynesworth out of their intrasquad scrimmage Saturday.

The team is just being extra-cautious. Moss has a tweaked hamstring and Haynesworth has dealt with pain in his knee, but neither injury is considered serious.

Redskins WR Devin Thomas is sitting out Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage with a hamstring injury.

Despite his improved maturity and work ethic, Thomas still has to get over the injury hurdle. Beat writer Jason Reid believes Malcolm Kelly could leapfrog him for the starting flanker job if Thomas can't "seize the opportunity on a platter in front of him." Thomas remains the favorite as long as the injury doesn't linger.

Rookie LB Brian Orakpo shined during the Redskins' scrimmage Saturday.

Orakpo continues to learn the ropes of being a strong side linebacker after playing defensive end in college. Redskins coach Jim Zorn ran at him and showed him play action during the scrimmage and the coach was pleased with how he responded. He'll be on the field a ton this season.

Right guard Randy Thomas (knee) has resumed practicing at Redskins camp.

Washington can breathe a big sigh of relief. OLs coach Joe Bugel made it sound last week like Thomas might need more knee surgery, but the 33-year-old says he "just takes a little bit more time to warm than I used to."

Devin Thomas (hamstring) returned to practice Sunday, after missing the Redskins' intrasquad scrimmage Saturday.

Thomas now needs to keep his momentum going and stay healthy into September to lock up a starting job and offer some post-hype sleeper value. His hamstring has been a problem since spring OTAs. Otherwise, he's looked good.

Redskins RB Anthony Alridge has been fumble prone early in training camp.

This gets you cut quickly. Alridge, a scatback who missed 2008 with a Lisfranc sprain, has also battled a sprained toe. The Skins are old at tailback in front of Alridge and he had an opportunity, but doesn't look to be seizing it.

Free agent OG Pete Kendall says he is still interested in playing this season.

"We've had some conversations with some teams," he said. "But at this point no one seems to be willing to bring me in a week into camp." Kendall is 36 and has little left, but could help someone in a backup center/guard role

Jason Brown revealed the Rams' strategy for stopping Albert Haynesworth when the team faces Washington in Week 2 -- tire Haynesworth out.

"We're going to be running hurry-up offense and he's going to get fatigued," Brown said. "When he gets fatigued, he taps out. He just falls down to the ground, and you're like, 'Oh my gosh, is he hurt? No, he's just giving the guy on the sidelines enough time to mosey on out there so he can go...get something to drink and then he comes right back." Upon hearing the idea, Skins coach Jim Zorn responded, "That's awesome. What a great strategy

Redskins coach Jim Zorn pointed out that Santana Moss has "a full knowledge of the offense now, too."

That's in addition to Moss being relatively healthy despite a little hamstring tweak. He's resting more in camp this year than in years past and keeping his legs in better shape. Moss is still very inconsistent and a risky pick. He'll probably be more of headache than his ADP is worth.

Former CFL star Dominique Dorsey has to make this team as a return specialist. And he's halfway home. He had some outstanding returns. The Skins need to reserve a spot on the roster for him. He's that good as a return guy -- and he runs with a little power.

Free agent RB Shaun Alexander again said he's not retired and wants to play in the NFL this season.

Yeah, we know Shaun. You want to play and we want to live on the moon. Until Edgerrin James and Warrick Dunn get jobs, Alexander is very unlikely to garner interest. But he probably won't stop telling us he has "a few good years left."

Colt Brennan made it through the first 12 days of Redskins camp without throwing an interception.

Brennan probably isn't getting as many reps as Jason Campbell or Todd Collins, but this would still be impressive in the backyard. Brennan finally got picked by strong safety Chris Horton in 9-on-9 drills Tuesday morning

Jim Zorn plans on making Redskins second-year TE Fred Davis a part of the passing game.

Just getting on the field will be an upgrade over Davis' rookie year, when he caught a grand total of three passes. The coaches said they couldn't trust Davis last season because he didn't know the playbook well enough. This season, Zorn says he can rely on Davis. However, with Chris Cooley around Davis' ceiling is about 20 catches in 2009.

Devin Thomas will be the starting flanker in the Redskins' preseason opener, coach Jim Zorn confirmed Tuesday.

Thomas had been nagged by a balky hamstring recently, but he's back to practice. He'll play ahead of Malcolm Kelly, with Antwaan Randle El either at split end or in the slot. Washington hosts Baltimore on Thursday night.

Despite Colt Brennan's vast improvement and potential, beat writer Jason Reid thinks Todd Collins will be the Redskins' No. 2 QB.

Reid admits that Brennan has serious ability, but says Collins' experience will win out. It's an interesting battle because starter Jason Campbell is on a short leash and entering the final year of his contract. If Brennan is going to be the quarterback of the future you would think he can beat out Collins.

Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache said rookie DE Jeremy Jarmon is ahead of the learning curve.

Jarmon was taken in the supplemental draft and is battling for playing time in a defensive line rotation. "When his mind catches up with his athletic skills, I think he'll possibly be on the field even a little sooner than we thought he would be," Blache said.

Santana Moss (hamstring) will not play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Ravens.

Moss' hamstring injury isn't believed to be serious. The team is just being overly cautious with the veteran, so he'll join a healthy Clinton Portis on the sidelines.

Brennan came on in the second half, after Todd Collins had already relieved Jason Campbell. He's going to have to play a lot better over the next two weeks to make a run at Collins' No. 2 job.

Malcolm Kelly had three catches for 25 yards on a night where the Redskins struggled to move the ball against the Ravens' first- and second-team defense. Coach Jim Zorn was complementary of both second-year receivers after the game. Thomas is favored to start opposite Santana Moss in Week 1.
