Just a quick recap of the draft after a busy weekend- I am still reading up on some of the later picks. At the top, we fulfilled the need for a pass rusher, as well as a potential nose tackle (though Jeffries can play anywhere along the line.) Hankerson should be a nice receiver for us, if he can improve his pass-catching (and he has the work ethic to do it.)
The Redskins traded down a couple times, and doubled the picks that they came into the draft with. Later picks were used to fill out depth at skill positions, namely WR, RB and the secondary.
It was curious that the Redskins did not address the QB situation, or the offensive line until the 7th round. Judging from a post on The Insider at the Post, Shanahan has confidence in John Beck to at least give him a shot next year to run the offense. As of right now, he is the only quarterback who is sure to be on the roster next season.
Maurice Hurt is an interesting pick in the seventh, who dropped due to concerns that he used marijuana. The Redskins do need help at guard, and Hurt played both spots at UF, so he will be good depth. The Redskins still need to make a move or two when the lockout lifts to help improve the line.
Bottom line....I am impressed with the Redskins draft class. It was refreshing for once to see the team with so many picks, and to get depth players in positions where we've had issues in the past. I would have liked to see the offensive line addressed more, but this is a process that will take longer than two off-seasons.
Oh, and Helu.....LOVE trading up for him in the fourth. That is the kind of back that Mike Shanahan wants- a guy with some speed who is a cutback runner. With Torain being a more physical back, I can imagine Helu getting some carries right away, and he's got the potential to get the majority of them.
