Of course there would be that speculation. No matter who is in charge of the Redskins, they will almost always be mentioned as a suitor for top shelf talent.

Personally, I don't think they are going after Asomugha. We already have enough invested in our other starters in the secondary in Hall, Otogwe and Landry. I think that Carlos Rogers is re-signed, and that is the end of that. Asomugha will cost too much money, and the Redskins have more holes that they need to fix than throwing money at a strength.

I could be wrong, but that is how I see it. And, until the Redskins prove otherwise, they will be linked to high talent free agents.

Like I said, until the team proves otherwise, they will always be considered interested in high profile free agents. It will be interesting to see if this is true though. This draft was a start in the right direction- lets also see how this next free agent period (whenever it is) continues that positive trend.

TIME FOR SOME REDSKIN UPDATES

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan implied he would be comfortable with John Beck as his starting quarterback in 2011.
Maybe he's shooting for Andrew Luck in next year's draft. "When (Beck) came out in 2007 ... he was by far my No. 1 guy," Shanahan said. "I think the world of him." Donovan McNabb won't return to D.C. and Rex Grossman is a free agent, leaving Beck as the only current Skins QB. Soon to be 30, Beck has made just four career starts and looked completely incompetent in them. We'd project Washington's record at 3-13 if Beck is the starter.

The Bengals are expected to decide in the coming days whether to sign a veteran QB to compete with second-rounder Andy Dalton.
The rumor mill is spitting out constant speculation that Donovan McNabb will head to Minnesota, but we suspect the Redskins -- hoping for a draft pick -- are behind those reports. The Bengals, installing a West Coast offense under Jay Gruden, actually make more sense as a landing spot for McNabb on a one- or two-year deal. If Cincy is interested, they just have to make sure McNabb doesn't talk to Carson Palmer or Chad Ochocinco about life under Mike Brown

The Redskins confirmed that second-rounder Jarvis Jenkins will be a two-gap end in Jim Haslett's 3-4 scheme.
Coach Mike Shanahan calls Jenkins the "prototype 3-4 defensive end," and the former Clemson star should be plugged right into the starting lineup opposite a rotation of Adam Carriker and Vonnie Holliday. The Redskins picked up as many six or seven rookie starters in the draft.

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that third-round WR Leonard Hankerson will compete for a starting job this summer.
Hankerson had the fourth-fastest forty time among receivers at the Combine, and Shanahan believes he had the largest hands. "I think he brings a lot to the table," said Shanny. With Santana Moss reaching free agency, the Skins have little more than Anthony Armstrong and injury-plagued bust Malcolm Kelly as holdovers

Per the NFL Draft Value Chart, the Redskins used the equivalent of the No. 83 overall pick to trade up for Roy Helu.
Helu was selected at No. 105. The Redskins also received the No. 178 pick from the Texans, but gave up Nos. 127, 144, and 152. The 83rd overall pick is a middle-of-the-third round selection, which is enough value for us to project Helu as Washington's probable starting tailback. His competition will come from much lesser talents Ryan Torain and Evan Royster

This is how I see their roles on the team this year

Helu- starting tailback, getting a majority of the carries

Torain- power back, used around the goal line and in short yardage situations

Keiland Williams- likely third down back and in on receiving downs

Royster has an uphill battle, but because of his draft spot, could edge Williams depending on his hands. He could also be a practice squad player, or the Skins could carry him as a special teamer.

If Leonard Hankerson(notes) is right – or even close to being right – the Washington Redskins got one hell of a deal.

The Redskins, who have had an acute need for wide receivers for a few years now, selected Hankerson in the third round Friday night, No. 79 overall.

The Miami product was the ninth receiver chosen in the draft and he ranks himself right up there at the top. The very top.

“I know I’m better than each one of those guys that was drafted before me,” Hankerson told The Sports Junkies this morning on 106.7 The Fan, according to Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “Hey, it’s over with now. I’m a Washington Redskin. I can’t do anything about it. Only thing that matters is what I do after the draft, so I’m looking forward to getting on the field with my new teammates, getting to meet my coaches and just having fun with them and proving (it) to everyone.”

Better than Julio Jones(notes), who went sixth overall to the Atlanta Falcons after a blockbuster trade?

“Of course, I wouldn’t say anything differently,” Hankerson said. “Of course I think that. I feel I’m the best receiver in the draft, I feel like I can make plays, i can do everything the other players do. I feel like I can block, run routes, go up and get the ball. I make plays. I broke every single season record this year. I feel like I can do it all.”

Mike Shanahan got a pretty good wide receiver in the fourth round a few years back – Brandon Marshall(notes). Maybe he can make things happen with Hankerson.

He compares very favorably with Terrell Owens, as far as strengths and weaknesses go. Hankerson has prototypical size, speed, runs solid routes and is going to put in time during and after practice. The big negative is that, like Owens, does not have good hands, and this will be where his work ethic will need to come in.

Only time will tell, but I really do love this pick if Hankerson puts in the effort to improve himself.

CSN Washington's Rich Tandler believes the drafting of three wide receivers "sends a clear message" to free agent Santana Moss.
Tandler doesn't suggest that the Redskins will move on from Moss, only that they now have some depth to do so if the free agent's contract demands are unreasonable. The Redskins are going nowhere this year, so it doesn't make sense to overpay for a 32-year-old receiver ideally suited to the No. 2 role

Redskins OLB Lorenzo Alexander will lose his temporary starting gig with first-rounder Ryan Kerrigan now in the fold.
Alexander was never meant to be more than a special teamer and key reserve at linebacker, as he lacks pass-rushing ability. Last season, coach Mike Shanahan praised Alexander as the best special teamer he's ever coached.

Jenkins is a similar player in that he's primarily suited for end in the 3-4, but can move over to the nose on occasion. We've already caught wind of one Haynesworth rumor involving the Broncos, but the Redskins are going to have a hard time moving him after his April indictment for sexual assault. Beat writer Rich Tandler expects Haynesworth to be "removed from the roster at some point after the lockout ends."

Coach Mike Shanahan expects fifth-rounder Niles Paul to help immediately on special teams and "have a chance to grow as a receiver."
Shanahan mentioned Paul as a candidate to return punts and kicks, so he's likely to compete with holdover Brandon Banks. If Paul leaves his immaturity behind, he has a chance to emerge as the No. 3 receiver in the next couple of years.

The Arizona Republic remains confident that Donovan McNabb will not end up with the Cardinals.
Dot connectors have tried putting McNabb in Cardinal Red for years because he has a home in Arizona. But "the Cardinals aren't interested," according to the Arizona Republic. More likely landing spots include Miami, Cincinnati, and perhaps Minnesota, although we have our doubts about the latter

ESPN's Adam Schefter lists the Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins, and Ravens as the primary suitors for Nnamdi Asomugha.
"And there will be more," Schefter adds. The Eagles and Cowboys have been connected to Asomugha since January, and the Redskins can never be ruled out of a high-profile free agent chase. The Ravens seem less likely to get involved after drafting Jimmy Smith. The Chargers, Texans, and Jets have also been mentioned as potential destinations

SI's Peter King believes free agent Rex Grossman will take the first snap of the 2011 season for the Redskins.
King appears to be making an educated guess here, not reporting. It's interesting because Grossman has been the subject of trade rumors and speculation from local outlets has John Beck entering camp as the starter. Grossman did start three games for the Skins last year, winning in Jacksonville and narrowly losing to the Cowboys and Giants. The 2003 first-round pick averaged 280 yards per game in those starts while posting seven touchdowns against four interceptions.

The South Florida South-Sentinel "hears" that the Redskins are the front-runners for Vince Young's services this offseason.
Redskins beat writer Rich Tandler has also heard talk of Vince Young in the nation's capital, so the smoke is building here. Due a $4.25 million bonus in addition to his $8.5 million salary, Young is likely to be released rather than traded. The Redskins are one of just two teams with no semblance of a viable starting QB. It's easy to see why V.Y. would be interested in signing on, as it's his quickest path to playing time.
