I think benching John Beck was a very stupid knee jerk reaction. Beck is a very inexperience QB so obviously it'll take him some time. He is more of a development/project type starting QB than a guy who's going to step right in and lead your offense to big yards. He has a stronger arm than Grossman, is way more mobile and has more upside and potential than Grossman. Not to mention he's the starting QB of an offense that was pretty mediocre to begin with without the losses of Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Tim Hightower, Jamaal Brown, Trent Williams, and Kory Lichtenstieger (?). Am I missing anyone?

Bottom line: Rex Grossman blows.

What was also a stupid decision was letting Kellen Clemens go before the season started. Even without the third quarterback rule, the team should have kept Clemens to see what he had. I would have no problem going with Clemens from here out if he had time to learn the playbook all this time. Though it this point, I agree that they should stick with Beck until the end of the season because Grossman blows and everyone knows that.

And you aren't missing anyone per se, but with Lichensteiger out, Montgomery is playing left guard and not in his natural postion at center, so that is four offensive line starters out of their position.

Grossman turned the ball over late in all those games too.

we have no running game, no need for good WRs since we cant throw the ball to any of them......and we simply cant rely on defense all game.

I am happy that the team was able to overcome a horrid first quarter and come back later in the game, and with the final drive. Not happy with the way our last drive ended- we should have gotten closer. Some of that blame is with the offense, the rest is Gano, because he did have enough on that kick.

The Williams injury looked nasty though, and that is a huge blow to our already hobbled line.

I don't think Gano is out after this game, but I expect the Redskins to bring in some sort of competition this week just to try them out. His job isn't 100% safe by a long shot.

I'll have some other comments later when I have time.

Im glad we lost, why fuck up now and drop in the draft. Game shouldnt even had gone into OT but Gano missed an early FG then the 52 yarder was a no brainer. Round 1 - QB Round 2 kicker.

A first round quarterback is a start, and unless we are going to go and spend for a quarterback (and the best option is Kyle Orton) that is they way they will go.

Shanahan also is probably going to stick with the group of backs he has now, and may or may not bring Hightower back. I would lean to no, because Royster is on the practice squad as well. I am not saying I agree with it, but I think Shanahan is happy with the group he has.

What we need is more depth on the offensive line and an offensive playmaker at wide receiver. Moss is nice, but isn't that explosive anymore. The injuries to Lichensteiger and Williams a few weeks ago demonstrated that the line is still our worst area and needs plenty of attention.

I think the D is OK, we lost the rookie in preseason, riley has been playing nice in the middle with Rak and Karrigan. Hall is still a bitch. I really think the problem is Kyle there. Father and son cant work together in a position like this. Yeah Rex was good today but next week he goes back to a shitty performance?

Hall is a bitch, and he is lucky that the NFL didn't throw a fine early in the game for his antics. I think that could be where DeSean Jackson received his fine as well, but that is neither here nor there.

What I did like about Hall was that he was critical of himself after the game, and said he deserved to be cut for the way he played in that game, and the season as a whole. That is a good thing for leadership, but you also don't start that shit on the field as a leader either.

Other thoughts from the game.......

I am really impressed with both Ryan Kerrigan and Stephen Bowen. Both players are great pass rushers and have never-ending motors. I will admit I was concerned with Bowen (especially after the Jenkins injury) because up until the middle of last year, he was never a full-time player, but he's done a great job here.

I also like the fact that the team is giving Perry Riley a look now. McIntosh is solid, but at this point, the team needs to do more of this and give other players on the depth chart a chance to play to see what we have.

Brandon Banks finally broke a good return and I think he looks back to normal now.

Roy Helu cemented in this game that he needs more touches. Both Tashard Choice and Ryan Torain struggled in the running game, and Helu earned a solid 4.4 YPC.

Pretty shocked that we won yesterday.

Kick blocking unit has been :turrible: the entire season. We had a field goal and extra point blocked by Bryant yesterday. He's one of the best, but is one of those guys you have to game plan for. I think that was our third blocked field goal this season, so something's got to give. If I am Danny Smith, I would be worried about my tenure with the club.

Roy Helu had a great game, rushing for over 100 yards and a touchdown, good enough to remain the starter according to Mike Shanahan. Helu also caught seven passes for 54 yards for an amazing day.

Having Santana Moss back was huge. He didn't put up great numbers at all, but the Seahawks were focused on him and it freed everyone up to make plays, especially Gaffney and Armstrong, who had a great touchdown reception.

Defense was solid as well. Marshawn Lynch is a great player, and they did their best to contain him. I am constantly amazed at how he always has forward progress and gets positive yards. He pushed LaRon Landry back late in the game and that is not an easy feat at all.

Grossman had a solid game, but made two stupid decisions with interceptions. He is proving that he is a good backup, but nothing more. I think it is a realistic possibility that he will be back next season, either to compete with a rookie for the quarterback job or to be a backup to either a rookie or another acquisition. Not saying I agree with it, but that is what I see happening.

I'll have some thoughts on the game later, but two players are facing suspensions which will end their seasons. Not a good thing for either, but especially for Fred Davis, as he is heading into free agency after the season. Also not good for the offense, as he has been the best player by far for the Skins.

(AP)—An already difficult season for the Washington Redskins is getting worse: Left tackle Trent Williams(notes) and tight end Fred Davis(notes) are expected to be suspended by the NFL for the last four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The people spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.

Williams, the No. 4 overall draft pick in 2010, and Davis, a second-round choice in 2008, are both starters for the Redskins, who fell to 4-8 with a 34-19 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday. Davis had six catches for 99 yards, both game highs.


Asked after the game about the pending suspensions, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said: “Well, No. 1, I’ve received no information about it, so I can’t comment on that at this time. But I will comment in the next day or two, depending on exactly what has happened.”

Neither Williams nor Davis was in the locker room when reporters were allowed to enter. Their lockers were cleaned out by team employees.

SI.com first reported Sunday that Davis and Williams would be punished. Citing an unidentified source, the website also said the players hadn’t received written notice from the NFL about their suspensions, so were able to play Sunday.

A league spokesman declined to discuss the matter.

But one of the people who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity said Williams and Davis were among 11 players who failed drug tests during a lockout-related grace period negotiated between the NFL and the players’ union. The other nine players’ cases were dismissed because they were first-time offenders; Davis and Williams each has tested positive more than once, the person told the AP.

Their Redskins teammates were hesitant to comment because nothing official has come out.

“It’s tough to play without those guys,” cornerback DeAngelo Hall(notes) said, emphasizing that he wasn’t aware whether reports about Williams and Davis were true. “But somehow, some way, we will. … Obviously we’re better with those guys.”

Davis leads the Redskins with 59 catches for 796 yards, taking over as Washington’s top tight end even before past Pro Bowl pick Chris Cooley(notes) was lost for the season with a left knee injury. Williams is generally considered the top offensive lineman on the team, which has lost seven of its last eight games after opening the season 3-1.

The resolution of the punishments was delayed in part by the case of Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson(notes), which also is connected to the union-negotiated grace period.

Benson originally was expected to get a three-game suspension for off-field conduct, but it wound up as two games based on the grace period for discipline. Benson’s representative said the player shouldn’t have received any punishment and filed an unfair labor practices complaint against the union, a complaint that was dismissed last week.

Benson wound up with a one-game suspension.

Raheem Morris could be resurfacing quickly.

The ex-head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is reportedly in the mix to join the Washington Redskins, who are looking for someone to clean up their secondary. George Wallace of WTOP radio in Washington reported Morris was spotted in the area dining with Redskins brass, leading one to believe he was in town for an interview.

It’s possible the Redskins could look to add Morris as their defensive backs coach and coach Mike Shanahan could also give him the title of assistant head coach. Morris and Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan have a relationship together from their days on the same staff in Tampa.

The Redskins could be a prime landing spot for Morris. They pay very well in comparison to the remainder of the league and if Morris has some success he could be in line for promotion to a defensive coordinator position or he could work his way back into being a head-coaching candidate again. That could take some time though.

Wouldn't be a bad hire, but I also think that this team needs to get rid of DeAngelo Hall as well. I'm done defending him. I know the team plays man almost 100% of the time, but he continued to get burned this year on a regular basis. I'm definitely waiting for that statistic to be run again for Burn Rate.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris has agreed to join the Washington Redskins staff as a defensive backs coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Wednesday evening.

Morris’ hiring comes less than two weeks after Tampa Bay fired him and exactly a week after he met with Redskins’ brass about the position.

Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined comment.

Morris, who went 4-12 in his final season in Tampa Bay, will work to upgrade a Redskins secondary that produced only 10 interceptions in 2011.

Morris had interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings late last week but didn’t receive an offer.

The 36-year-old Morris has strong ties to the Redskins. During the mid-2000’s, he served as an assistant in Tampa Bay alongside Kyle Shanahan, and during the same time, Washington General manager Bruce Allen held the same position with the Bucs.

Definitely a good hire, as I said above, but Morris has some work cut out for him. Hall got burned quite a bit, and both starting safeties battled injuries and at times were ineffective. It will be interesting to see if either Otogwe or Landry are brought back.

Forgot to post that........lets see how he does, though I am not sure how much better qualified he is than Keenan McCardell, whose contract was not renewed. Maybe time for a fresh perspective, especially considering what the Redskins have invested at receiver recently.

Also, Hightower wants to come back, and I would welcome him. I think Roy Helu proved he can be a starter in this league, but you need more than one back and Hightower is a great change of pace runner, but his specialty is pass blocking. That is one skill the Redskins definitely need from a back, considering how bad the line has performed.

Tim Hightower would like to return to the Washington Redskins this coming season.

But his first order of business has to be recovering from a torn ACL that ended his 2011 campaign after six games. The Redskins have younger options now too after Roy Helu and Evan Royster stepped up in his absence.

Hightower is a native of Alexandria, Va., so staying at home and playing for the Redskins is his first choice.

“I called it home growing up here, and to be able to call it home for my job, that would be great,” Hightower told the team’s Web site. “I love this organization. Coming back here made me realize how much it would mean for me to be here. Getting a chance to play here and be around family, and just go places and be around fans and this city, it was special for me. This is somewhere I would like to play a long time.”

Hightower might not be healthy enough to hit the practice field until mid-June and that is if everything goes according to plan. He could be added for depth but Helu and Royster had moments late in the season for a team that will focus its offseason on adding a quarterback.

If coach Mike Shanahan’s comments at the end of the year are an indicator, Hightower could indeed be in place again.

“I’m thinking that he’ll be back full-speed, ready to go,” Shanahan said. “A lot of people who have (torn) ACL’s, with the rehab and what they go through, they’re usually able to come back full-speed. And we’ll keep our fingers crossed that he goes through rehab and there are no setbacks and he is as good as new.


“I like the way he practiced. He was accountable on a day-to-day basis, the way he played throughout preseason and the first four games. He’s tough, hard-nosed, and he was a good addition to our football team.”

Jabar Gaffney led the Washington Redskins in catches and receiving yards last year. On Tuesday, the Redskins released him. This might seem incongruous, but it speaks to where the Redskins are in their franchise building process.

Gaffney, who caught 68 passes for 947 yards in 2011 from the Redskins' quarterback combination of Rex Grossman and John Beck, isn't part of the future plans for the offense. The Redskins signed free-agent wide receivers Pierre Garcon (25 years old) and Josh Morgan (26) in advance of drafting quarterback Robert Griffin III (22) with the second pick in the draft. Gaffney isn't an old man by any means at 31, but the Redskins want to put a receiving corps around Griffin that can grow and flourish with him as he develops as an NFL quarterback.

Why not cut Santana Moss, who turns 33 next month and had a worse year than Gaffney had? Well, one reason is that the Redskins believe Moss will be better as the slot receiver with guys like Garcon, Morgan and second-year man Leonard Hankerson on the outside, where Gaffney's role is likely (they hope) going to be filled by Garcon, who offers more big-play potential.

The Redskins like Gaffney and appreciate the production he gave them last year. They just don't see much value in having him around going forward as they develop their young offense around their new star quarterback. He was a 2011 stopgap, kind of like Grossman was at quarterback. They're not cutting him because of anything he said or did on Twitter a couple of weeks back. They're not cutting him because they don't think he's any good. They're cutting him because he doesn't fit there anymore.

And yeah, to answer a question I know I'll get 1,000 times in the next couple of days, I believe the Dallas Cowboys would be wise to take a look at him.
