Looks like Jay Gruden is going to be the guy, unless he doesn't want the job. Informal meeting with Allen yesterday over dinner, the formal meeting is today. Lots of speculation that he is their favorite, and that they will press to get the deal done immediately.

I am backing off the statements I made above a bit. I saw where Mike Brown wanted to draft Kaepernick, but backed off because Gruden told him Dalton would be a better fit for his offense. So will we have to try and fit RGIII into something he isn't a fit for? Will we have QB Controversy 2.0 with RGIII and Cousins again? I also wasn't a fan of his play calling in the playoff game, and it didn't seem like he was adjusting to what the Chargers did on defense.

James Franklin is apparently next on the list as Gruden goes to interview with either Tennessee or Minnesota (I think it's the latter.) Franklin's interview, of course, is pending the Penn State job as well.

As you guys have guessed by now, I am not a fan of the Gruden hiring. Want to make it even worse? We are expected to retain Haslett, Morris as well as Sean McVay, who is expected to become the offensive coordinator. Despite that, still plans to call plays, which I hate from an experienced coach, much less a first year coach who has a lot of work to do. It rarely works out for coaches who try and do more, such as calling plays and having personnel power, so yet another reason for me to not like this hire.

McVay is now the new offensive coordinator as expected. I've changed my tune about him, as he has the backing of a good portion of the players, including Chris Cooley. Cooley's praise is particularly intriguing for me. McVay won't call plays, which I don't think Gruden should be doing, but McVay is certainly able to get the game plan ready and communicated to everyone.

I am currently torn on Haslett. On one hand, I want him desperately gone, but more stories are coming out that Shanahan took over some play calling duties at times. Looking back, there were a lot of calls at key points in the game that were uncharacteristic of Haslett-led units. Haslett being retained isn't official, but is expected. I can keep an open mind for at least a season, but Haslett certainly has a lot to prove to everyone.

Raheem Morris is an expiring contract, and if we keep Haslett as expected, he's likely going to search for a coordinator position with another team. Chris Foerster is the last "big name" coach left to decide on. He's a zone-blocking guy, and there is no word on whether or not that will be the continued blocking scheme for the team.

Another interesting note, Earnest Byner is set to interview for his former position as a player and coach, running backs.

Coaching updates:

Ben Kotwica was hired away from the Jets as the new special teams coordinator. Our ST were historically bad last season, but the Jets were middle of the pack as far as return coverage and were in the top 10 for return yards. Solid hire, and he's a young, up and coming coach.

Former MD player and Cleveland assistant Brian Baker was hired to coach outside linebackers. Former assistant Kirk Olivadotti returns to coach the inside linebackers, great addition there. Jacob Burney is being retained as defensive line coach, as is Raheem Morris for the secondary.

McVay is officially the new OC. My guess is Haslett is still the DC, but that still hasn't been confirmed yet.

Haslett confirmed to return. I'm not as mad with that as I thought. Haslett's defense, except for last year, continued to improve each year. The offense left our defense without support for sometimes a half at a time, and they suffered. Add in the rumors of Shanahan taking defensive play calls away from Haslett in certain situations, and I'm willing to give him another chance.

Wes Phillips, Wade's son, was hired to coach tight ends, replacing McVay.

Gruden's five year contract is all guaranteed. I am still not sold on Gruden, but it is clear Allen is pinning his hopes on him. This is a very pivotal five year mark for the Redskins in the Snyder era. I really hope it works out but I am still pessimistic.

Redskins tight end Fred Davis, a pending free agent, faces another suspension for a failed marijuana test, according to a league source.

The former second-round pick of the Redskins has served a suspension in the past, with his off-field issues limiting his free-agent options. Set to be a free agent in March, Davis played sparingly last season and has been slowed by injuries as well after showing promise early in his career.

Davis' time in Washington could be coming to an end, with this latest suspension the latest setback. Redskins draft pick Jordan Reed emerged as a key cog in the passing game prior to his concussion issues, and Logan Paulsen beat out Davis for playing time as a second tight end. Davis was inactive for long stretches last season, earning a spot in former coach Mike Shanahan's doghouse.

Defensive side of the ball worries me. In a 3-4, you want the bookend OLB, but Orakpo is set for a nice raise in FA and I don't think his all-around game warrants that amount of money. The franchise tag is a hard sell because of the value of other OLB and the damage to the cap space we just got back won't be helpful. We also have Fletcher to replace, as well as Perry Riley as a free agent, whom I would re-sign provided his contract demands don't go through the roof. Oh, and Rob Jackson is also a free agent. Lots of work to be done for the linebackers as well.

As for the secondary, we invested a lot of draft choices there last year- Amerson, Thomas and Rambo. Both Wilson and Hall are free agents, as are Meriweather and Doughty. Wilson is likely gone, because I imagine we sign a free agent corner to be the #1, and with the depth on the roster, I don't see a spot for him. For all the crap I gave him, Hall actually played surprisingly well, and if he doesn't want big money, I would bring him back for another year or two if the price is right. Our eyes should definitely be on either Grimes or Verner, though I think Grimes is a likely franchise tag for the Dolphins.

As for safety, work needs to be done there as well. Meriweather should be gone, but I would bring back Doughty. He takes a lot of flak from fans, because he can't cover. We all know this, but he's a good guy to have in the box, he plays special teams, but the important part is his leadership. With Fletcher heading into retirement, Doughty is needed to help lead the defense and special teams.

I think the Skins draft another CB early in round 2. There is a ton of talent at the position and inevitably a 1st round talent will fall to them in round 2. I'd love it if one of the Florida guys dropped.

I'd love to see Byrd or Ward in addition to Grimes/Verner. Kind of surprised to see that list have Orakpo #3, but not a surprise with Grimes ranked #9. He was the second ranked CB according to Pro Football Focus, so why is he so low on this list? Confusing.

Also, Doug Williams is now officially in the front office, in the personnel department.

DeAngelo Hall was re-signed to a four year deal that will pay him $4 million a season. A modest amount, but I will be interested to see if move is to make him a safety, or transition him over there next season. I can't think that the Redskins won't sign more secondary help. I would love to see Brent Grimes or Jarius Byrd, or Alterun Verner. I would sign Grimes or Verner, have Amerson start opposite the signing, and then have Hall play the slot this season.

"Little progress" in talks with Perry Riley. This must mean he thinks he is worth more than he is, or he's holding the Redskins over the fire because they know it would be difficult to lose both inside linebackers in one off-season. We need to have Riley back, but not at an exorbitant price.

For the Redskins to trade Kirk Cousins, the word is that a second round pick is expected back in return. With a pretty good draft of QBs shaping up, I can't see a team offering that for Cousins this year.

I also have to :lol: at Fred Davis for getting suspended indefinitely for marijuana. All personal opinions aside, it's a banned substance by the league, he's already lost about $700,000 for previous suspensions, why continue doing it? What a clown.

And to make matters worse for Davis, he was caught yesterday or the day before for DUI and was arrested. What an assclown. Sad part is some team will give him a chance on a one year deal for the vet minimum.

The Washington Redskins have no plans -- or any interest -- in trading backup quarterback Kirk Cousins, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Cousins had told the Redskins after the season that he would welcome a trade and recently reiterated his desire publicly.

"Nothing changes from the day I was drafted," said Cousins, a fourth-round pick in 2012 -- three rounds after Robert Griffin III. "There's no chance to compete, so if I can't get it in D.C., I'd be open to having that chance somewhere else."

But the Redskins like Cousins as insurance for Griffin, coming off a tough 2013 that began with knee surgery and ended with him being benched for the final three games. Cousins said new coach Jay Gruden made it clear to him that Griffin will be the starter. Also, Gruden's agent, Bob LaMonte, said one reason his client was intrigued by this job was Griffin's potential.

Cousins is under contract through the 2015 season so there's no urgency to deal him at this time. It's uncertain if the Redskins' stance would change should another team make a can't-refuse offer.

Earlier this week, the Washington Post reported the Redskins wanted at least a second-round pick for Cousins, a high price given his relative inexperience. Cousins has started four games for Washington and appeared in four others. He has completed 56.2 percent of his passes for 1,320 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. As a starter, he's thrown for 1,176 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Last week, Cousins said he could accept whatever happened.

"I won't lose a lot of sleep over the unknowns," Cousins said. "If it doesn't present itself, then I enjoyed being part of the Redskins and look forward to being with them. Until I'm told otherwise, I'm a Redskin and I expect to handle the role as No. 2 as best I can."

Thank you Redskins. The market was not going to materialize for a first, and his performance last year didn't really justify that, so the best move is still keeping Cousins.
