Keep in mind that I have now been watching soccer for 2 weeks:
Suarez:
He did it because he is a crazy person. I don't think he thought about the consequences of doing it, I think he just did it because he is a retard. He's been caught and punished twice for it, so there's no way he could actually think he would get away with it. I think he probably just snapped and did it Tyson style.
I have a feeling FIFA will let him off easy, though, since he's a star and I think it's pretty lame but it is soccer and most of the fans are 3rd world lunatics themselves so outside of a civilized country like the US it's probably not considered crazy to take a chunk out of someone's neck in the heat of the battle.
ESPN:
I gotta give credit to ESPN's presentation of the World Cup. They've done a great job all around from screen graphics to camera angles of Brazil to interviews and commentating/broadcasting. I rarely have a chance to sit down and watch more than a game because of my work schedule but I haven't had any complaints when I've been able to catch one. Even the commercials have been good.
Star Power:
While I expect FIFA to give Suarez a slap on the wrist, for new fans and very casual watchers like myself, the superstars mean everything. The teams with star power are the draw and ESPN has done a nice job of marketing guys like Neymar, Benzema, Messi, and Ronaldo. I'm sure every team has a few great players but casual American fans need to know and be able to watch the superstars because they are the most fun and likely to score.
Overall:
I've really enjoyed the World Cup more than I thought it would. I'm enjoying watching teams other than the US more than I thought I would. As for the US, they got lucky against Ghana and unfortunate against Portugal but it looks like they can compete. I don't know much about the team but I would like to see Wondolowski get more playing time since everyone around here (San Jose) speaks so highly of him and they lack scoring power.
