Xbox Live To Offer "Game DVR," Dynamic Achievements

In addition to the company's talk of "intelligent TV," Microsoft unveiled some new gaming capabilities for the next-gen version of Xbox Live. Xbox One allows players to save and share gameplay footage and gives publishers the ability to create dynamic achievements.

Microsoft's Marc Whitten spent a few minutes during the Xbox Reveal event today talking about the evolution of Xbox Live for the company's new Xbox One console. The new system and network architecture allows both gamers and game developers to access the power of cloud computing. This is going to impact your game experience on Xbox Live in some significant ways. For the gamer, Whitten says that all you entertainment content - games, movies, television, music, and more - are stored in the cloud and available to you "anywhere, anytime." This is also true for game saves.

Developers can also access the power of Microsoft's cloud for "direct game computations," which he said will result in "bigger matches and more persistent worlds." This allows for features like asynchronous matchmaking (meaning that you could, for example, watch television while you wait for your multiplayer match to begin) and - most exciting - the ability for developers to constantly update and add achievements to a game throughout its lifecycle.

It's worth noting, however, that any game using the cloud computation for core game features would essentially require an online connection.

To make all this possible, Microsoft is beefing up the number of servers on Xbox Live from 15,000 to 300,000.

There was a report recently that confirmed MS was actively monitoring Skype audio and video calls. As in watching listening monitoring not looking out for terrorists. Im not having that fucking thing plugged in and "on" all day. I dont trust a post Gates MS.

Your Achievements Will Transfer To Xbox One, Can Be Added Post-Release

Apparently you can take it with you. Microsoft announced during its Xbox reveal event that players’ Xbox 360 profiles and achievements are making the transition to the new system.

That’s good news to players who have toiled over the past seven years to scrounge up every last bit of Gamerscore from the Xbox 360 library. Microsoft has also revealed how the concept of achievements is expanding in the next generation.

“We find a pattern where a user will purchase a game, they’ll play the game, they’ve maxed out achievements within three to four weeks, but they’re playing the game six months later,” says Chad Gibson, Xbox Live’s principal group program manager. “We really want to enable our achievement system to fully embrace cloud power, which is why in this generation we’ve got cloud achievements. Achievements are decoupled from the actual client of the game, so a game developer can be adding achievements weekly, monthly, or quarterly and constantly be adding new opportunities for the game player and to constantly maintain and offer fun experiences for those users, even if they’ve been playing the game for six, seven, eight months.”

Companies can release new achievements for a retail game to keep players playing. The current system allows publishers to incorporate additional achievements with DLC. This is different. Under the new system, players can earn achievements that are doled out beyond the current 1,000 limit that accompanies retail games.

The new system offers publishers a considerable amount of freedom. Achievements and challenges can span between several games in a publisher’s library. For instance, Activision could hypothetically keep track how far a player runs in their entire Call of Duty career, rewarding players with an achievement when they hit a particular distance milestone. Or EA could award points to players who win a Madden game with a team that’s bound for the Super Bowl.

Microsoft didn’t say whether players’ avatars would be making the move, but they were conspicuously absent from the console’s reveal.

I disagree. I think it looks pretty nice. Not much of a change but they didn't have to change much. Looks like they addressed my issue with the Start button.uft:

At first the one angle made it look huge (that's what she said) but the other pics you posted make it look like it's about the same size as the current console.

As for Kinect needing to be plugged in (why not make it a permanent part of the console then?!?) and only being able to play your PURCHASED games on ONE console or account is a fucking joke. I'm sorry, but it's already bullshit that I can't share downloadable purchases from XBLA on my wife's console, like I can on PS3. Now if she wants to play the next Bioshock after I'm done with it we'll have to pay an additional fee? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Also, so much for JMS's hopes of M$ trying to one up Sony by including backwards compatibility. This thing seems like a giant fail.

Sony can now be more lax about it, which would win over a ton of gamers. If they can appease the developers while allowing game resales, this console war is as good as over IMO. This is one of the biggest issues with the coming generation.

That is true. they could end up doing the same thing. If they do I will feel all that much better on waiting on these consoles, although it looks like I won't have ANY interest in the new Xbox at this point.

So I don't really have the energy to sift through a lot of this mess (these announcements are kind of mind boggling to me in light of the shit kicking MS already took and how long they pushed this shit back), but if the purchased games are buy account (which I feel like it would HAVE to be -- although I've been saying that phrase a lot and they still keep going in the opposite direction), would it be like my Arcade games are now, where if I have someone else playing a co-op game with me and I'm the primary account, they can play games they haven't purchased, or would they also have to buy?

I know I'm in a pretty unique situation, but NOT being able to download purchased games on multiple consoles in my own house is ridiculous.
