[PS3] Sony patents tech to block second-hand games

In comparison to other platforms, the PS3 was about as unhackable as you are going to get in today's age. It took people like 5 years to actually hack the system and copy games. The 360 was hacked within months of launch.

Wont affect twiggles...he doesnt buy used...plus he is moving towards download only...even though he said he would not buy a next gen console if it was download only.

I do buy used but very rarely. The past year plus it's only been games from Gamefly. I can't remember the last time I bought a game from Gamestop.

Where did you get that I'm moving towards all digital? Because I upgraded to a 1TB HDD? That was just because of all the shit I get with PS+ and I ran out of room on my 320GB. I'll always take a disc over a download any day.

If this is true, which I highly doubt, I wonder who outweighs who? If Sony or MS did this, would they lose customers? Probably. But how many developers and publishers would want to make games exclusively for their system knowing that anyone that wanted to play them had to buy them new?

One thing I don't understand about this: shouldn't Sony really only be worried about their first party stuff? 3rd party games that appear on both systems already made their money for Sony as a platform. So this is, I guess, just them trying to find a way to push their digital direct day 1 stuff?

I guess I just don't get the rational. You burn more bridges here than you save money.

they own the patent. it allows them the ability to charge any developer to use this technology. they seem to think the online pass is not a full proof solution, so developers may see this as a better option.

plus the article is saying this does not work when offline. so its really the same idea as a used game that doesnt have an online pass. Lame either way, but its no different than a company forcing an online pass with its games.

Part of the war. SOPA included such backers as monster cable and other non digital realm companies. Why ? Because they wanted there "names" protected online so the end result is Ebay and Craigslist ads would be taken down if they contained the name of the product in the description.
All these companies want you to buy from them and only them and never ever be able to transfer or obtain there product by any other means.
Fuck them all.

if you learned anything as of late...you really don't have to pay $60 for new games anymore, unless you NEED it on release day.

Like JMS said (I think it was him), this is just another step towards full digital distribution. It's not like you can trade in used digital games or buy them used.

I also think if this does comes to fruition there is really no way that Sony would o forward with it unless they have serious backing from developers and publishers. They might be signing exclusive deals with them right now. Just think if you could only play the next Assassin's Creed on the PS4 because Ubisoft, who has always been stauncly against used games sales, wants it on PS4 to prevent used sales. People would bitch to the heavens but you know damn well if they love that series not only will they buy the game but they will buy a PS4 to play it.

I personally prefer gamers have as many choices as possible but if this happens it's not really going to affect me much.

Nope, not at all. You will still see retail prices at $60, because the companies will want to profit as much as they can from the hard core gamers who have to have the game day one. Also, it devalues their product.

Now, I do think with digital games, they would have the ability to do more sales and specials at a later date, because they're making more profits off the release-day sales without a middle-man, but they won't do anything to take that $60 MSRP price away. If anything, digital release just locks that price in and it won't go up.

Was just reading a thread on Reddit about WreckitRalph being digital download first. Fn thing may end up being more expensive than the 4 disc bluray.

There is no way prices go down. Once that established price is set it doesnt matter how much theyre saving. Only occasionally will companies price things lower but as a catch line not as a standard practice. Theyll just whine that bandwidth and servers are uber expensive too and we're paying for convenience.

The one way this would affect me is the fact that I my wife has her own PS3. It would be pretty ridiculous if I buy a game and two different people in the same house can't even play it. But I would imagine that policies would be similar to how they are now and I could have my profile on her console and vice versa. So in theory she should be able to play that copy of Borderlands 3 after I finish it. I'm just wondering if she will have to remain signed into my profile to play or if the game will just check to see if my profile is on the console?
