So what if the Jets ended up being tied with some team for the 6th seed and the Jets get in because they have a better strength of victory, large part being because they beat the Curtis Painter led Colts. I am pretty sure that won't happen this year but if it did that would really mess some things up.

My beef with it is not the perfect season nonsense, or even the playoff implications, but rather continuity.

The Colts have a history of doing this, and for some reason, be it coincidental or not, the only time the Colts won the Super Bowl this decade was when they went all out from start to finish.

I know you want to protect your stars, but isn't it more important to be firing on all cylinders come playoff time? Granted, it's Peyton Manning and there's no one more cerebral and ready for any game, but the rest of the team, can they just flip a switch after basically being on cruise control for 3 weeks?

I consider "holding back" to be one of many reasons why the Cowboys played so sloppily in their playoff loss 2 years ago.

I understand why the Colts do it, but I don't like it.

They do not even rank amongst the top 5 Superbowl teams of all time and the only reason anybody ever talks about them is the undefeated season, which I will agree is a pretty big reason. That said, if the Patriots had beat the Giants in '07 they would have been considered a MUCH better team in history than the '72 Dolphins.

The Dolphins remained the NFL's top defense in 1973...BOOM HEADSHOT! If you look at 1970-75 for the Dolphins, you'd see that they were consistently a top 5 offensive and defensive team for those 6 seasons. Pretty remarkable.

None of the teams you listed above the Dolphins appeared in 3 straight Super Bowls like the 1971-73 Dolphins, and the Bears and Packers teams didn't even win another Super Bowl. The 1992 Cowboys??? REALLY?!

Awesome! Now you are claiming that the 1996 Packers lacking a 1000-yard RB or WR somehow makes them a BETTER team. The 1972 Dolphins had 2 more 1000-yard RBs than the 1996 Packers had and 2 more Super Bowl appearances. Again, I don't even have to say anything...you are doing a good job of arguing for me.

BTW, the 1996 Packers didn't really face anyone in the playoffs. The Niners were a wildcard team, the Panthers were in their first postseason in history (and helpfully defeated GB's bogey team, Dallas), and the 11-5 Patriots were one of the worst teams to make the Super Bowl in recent years.
