Alberts doesn't make "left tackles money". His contract is no where near Joe Thomas' or Jake Long's, let alone Walter Jones or Chris Samuels. Also, other teams move / keep guys like Alberts on the right side (ala Jordan Gross). Finally, this move was originally suggested by NFLN's Mike Mayock. Mayock figures this would be a solid move because the Chiefs would be set at the position for the next decade. Regardless, all of this might be moot because the Chiefs could still in a few other directions (trade down, pick Tyson Jackson, pick Curry etc).

Another team would pay Albert LT money to be their LT once he hits free agency. Thus, the Chiefs wouldn't be set for the next decade at tackle.

I'm glad you think it's a good move just because Mike Mayock said so.

Well I'll say this, when it comes to player evaluations and personnel decisions, I give alot more weight to the opinions of people like Gil Brandt, Mike Mayock, Charlie Casserly, Brian Billick etc than I do to the opinions of the average VSN poster.

To me taking a franchise left tackle when you already have one is stupid , its my opinion. You can pick up a Tackle in the 3rd-5th round who can perform better than the Cheifs current RT....

I hear you, but I'm not convinced at this point in his career that Branden Albert is a "FRANCHISE" left tackle. He might be, but the term "franchise" usually brings to mind accolades like offensive rookie of the year, pro bowls, all-pro selections etc. To truly be a "franchise" type player usually means you're a top 5-10 player at your position in the league. I'm not convinced Albert is there yet.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Albert, and thought he was a nice pick last year. I'm just saying the exact same guy who was essentially Albert's biggest champion as a legit top 15 pick last year, Mike Mayock, also suggested that pairing him with Monroe would be a nice move for the Chiefs. The fact that people disagree with him isn't news, but it's kind of funny hearing it come from the same people who thought he was wrong about Albert last year. Now some of these people are making it sound like Albert is Willie Roaf incarnate.

I think games are, by in large, won in the trench's. Therefore, I'd have no problem with my team trying to build an elite offensive line. This is where Mayock's coming from; you have those two guys and you have the foundation for an elite line for the next 5+ years. The fact that other people out right reject this idea, says something to me about their football acumen.

Albert will be a top 5-10 LT at some point. He played very very well last year as a rookie. While reading up on the tackles in this year's draft, I read a scout's opinion that Albert is "more athletic than all of these guys" meaning all of the tackles in this year's draft. I've also seen a re-do of last year's draft where players were "drafted" based on what we know about their rookie seasons and Albert was taken #2 overall behind Jake Long. He's really good. He's going to be elite.

NOBODY does this. NOBODY takes tackles in back to back drafts in the first round. NOBODY moves a really good young LT to the right side. Good teams DEFINITELY don't do it. Do the Patriots have 1st round tackles? Nope. Steelers? Nope. Colts? Nope. You get the picture. Name one team who has won a Superbowl with 1st round picks at both tackle spots.

I'm a big fan of building an elite offensive line and winning games in the trenches, but you don't have to get a fucking RT in the first round to do that! That's the point. The Chiefs used to have an elite offensive line. Willie Roaf was the only 1st round pick. Hell, they had 2 starters who were UNDRAFTED. Will Shields was a 3rd rounder. They had bums at RT. You don't have to burn 1st round picks to build a great offensive line. You just have to draft well and hit on your later picks.

That's surprising because you were calling him Alberts earlier and you think kicking a quality LT over to RT is a good idea.

That's not the point, other than the Steelers last year, name one Super Bowl winner with a less than good offensive line? Regardless, you make it sound like there's only one way to build a contending team, when there's not. The fact of the matter is I could really care less what the Chiefs do tomorrow.

The point is that very few teams build their offensive lines with 1st round picks. Teams take LT's with 1st rounders and that's usually it. You never see a team with more than 2 first rounders on the OL.

Again, there is not a single formula per se as to how to build a contender (i.e. only pick position X at this point in the draft, and in only certain years). If there is a magical formula please bring it to my attention. However, there is one single key to drafting well, and that is to pick according to your draft board (take the best player available as often as possible) and avoid picking for needs.

All I'm saying Blick is if the Chiefs can't trade out of the 3rd spot, AND Monroe is the guy on their board with the highest draft grade, then they could sure do ALOT worse. I think this is all moot because it's probably not going to happen. I just think it's funny when average shmoes like us think we're NFL personnel people with a better grasp of team building / personnel than people who have proven track records and are considered experts in the field.

There is a formula to building a good offensive line, and it doesn't include taking bookend tackles in back to back drafts. LT is the only prestigious position on the OL. It's the only OL position that consistently has 1st round value. Every once in a while, a guy like Steve Hutchinson will come along and be worth a 1st rounder, but more often than not, you find your starting RT and interior linemen outside of the 1st round. That is the formula that most teams follow.

So, if Sanchez has the highest grade on KC's board, should they take him? You can't completely ignore need and take best player available when you have so many needs like the Chiefs. I think we will be successful if we draft to the strengths of the draft, which are OL, WR, and pass rusher. Since OL is a position of depth in this draft, I think the Chiefs will choose to look at RT later which, like I said earlier, is the formula that winning teams follow, and Pioli comes from a winning team.

The 1969 Chiefs had 3 1st round picks, but they were G-C-G. Their tackles were drafted in the later rounds (although Tyrer and Hill were probably their two best linemen).

I think generally the point is that you need a good OL to win a Super Bowl, regardless of where they are drafted. If you use some first rounders at the position, you'd have a better chance at having a good OL.

Good OL is Good OL regardless of where they were drafted.

That Cowboys line of the 90's was filled with first day picks (no first rounders though).
