Just to clarify something, while Overeem talks about being informed late and not having time to get ready, he absolutely knew in late June about the planned 9/10 date, because in late June was when he asked if it could be delayed until October so his toe injury could heal up. He had a minimum 11 weeks if he had started camp when he was told. By the time he found out they were going to do the tournament on that day without him, yes, then he’d have had eight weeks. Overeem was told when he beat Fabricio Werdum, that the semifinals would likely be in October as that is what was being said that night. Showtime made the call for 9/10. There were forces who wanted it moved to October to save Overeem, thinking it would hurt the tournament without him, but Showtime had no available Saturday in October between boxing and other programming, and UFC already had 10/1, 10/8 and 10/29 booked and it makes no sense to run a show head-to-head with yourself, so 9/10 was the only date possible. At that point Overeem either could agree or be pulled and this is what happened. There were those in the company who were not happy he did Ariel Helwani’s show to make it appear UFC was unfair to him and threw the date at him late enough that he wouldn’t have time to adequately train. Overeem now hopes that his next fight will be a title defense against the tournament winner, which if that’s the case, wouldn’t take place until several months into 2012.
