I'm on the other side of the fence on this one. I'm one that thinks 11 mil per year for Madson is really overrating him and rather get two draft picks in his place.

I agree with you but the phillies window to win is about 2 or 3 years, they are old and by the time his deal would be up everyone would be looking at Howards deal

Even if I agreed with this, getting two draft picks would add to our depleted farm. Also I don't understand what Howards bad contract has anything to do with Madson
 
It has become "increasingly clear" that Papelbon's price might not be much higher than what Scott Boras is seeking for Madson, says Stark. The team has been debating the merits of keeping Madson versus signing Papelbon for quite some time.
 
I don't get why the Phillies are prioritizing closer over shortstop given their relative importance and relative scarcity, but hey it is not my team. You want to overpay for Papelbon or Madson, be my guest.

I can't see why they don't bring back Rollins though, how many decent shortstops are there?
 
The Phillies have agreed to sign Jonathan Papelbon, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. The deal is pending a physical. It is likely that Papelbon will receive a four-year contract.

I don't think it's a question of priorities. Right now Rollins is holding out for a 5year deal, which the Phillies don't seem to be willing to do. I think they are letting him test the free agent market to see if he can get that deal. If he can't, which I'm fairly sure he won't, he'll sign here, but it would take time.

But I don't think the Rollins deal is affected by the Paps deal at all IMO.

We get two picks when Madson signs somewhere else. A first round pick which will be higher than what we had (Had the last pick) and a compensation pick.

Maybe it's me...maybe because Madson never got a true shot to close in Philly but I just don't see him as a closer who's worth that coin (and yes I know JP ain't worth that much too)

I agree, but when it comes to the Yankees or Phillies it doesn't really matter. I can't really kill the Phillies here, they can afford to toss a few extra dollars at a guy and it doesn't make a difference.
