I don't know this guys history, so I can't say it was dirty, but it definitely was DUMB. The timing of the hit and the target (high) was definitely DUMB. If this guy has a history of this kind of thing, then it was DUMB and DIRTY.

To be fair it was a clean hit.. no helmet to helmet or anything of that nature.

That being said it was a pure cheap shot because Clifton didnt see it coming and he didnt even have the ball. Pretty inexcusable shit.. if this was just a regular tackle off a punt, im saying that was a HELL of a shot.. but because of the circumstances it was a cheap shot. Wasnt dirty tho..

I'm saying it was a penalty. He committed a penalty and they threw a flag. I don't think he should have been suspended, I don't think he shoulda been fined.

You can't call a football player on a field in a game they are aware they are participating in, defenseless. He knew when they kicked the ball big fast men were gonna come at his ass, that is the job he took.

The guy that hit him shoulda been paying more attention to what he was doing. So , IMO, was the shot cheap? NO! Was the shot careless? YES!

It was a cheap shot because you cant hit a returner without the returner having an opportunity to field the ball and another thing, if you are loving up for the ball, do you know that you are about to get hit like that? That make Smith defenseless. If he just wrapped him up, then yes it would be fine with a penalty for kick catch interference and no fine or suspension. He deserved the ejection, fine and suspension because he jumped or launched into his neck area. This is the explanation NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson said in the suspension letter to Wesley.

"The prohibited contact in this case went well beyond simply interfering with the receiver," Anderson wrote in a letter to Wesley. "Instead, by striking your defenseless opponent in the head and neck area, you committed an unnecessary and unnecessarily dangerous act that is specifically prohibited by the rules.

Oh, I get it. Its the returner's fault...its his job to be the recipient of a hit delivered to his head/neck area when the ball is still a full 3 seconds away from him.

I've read some dumb stuff in my message board time, but this is one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Wesley wasn't even close to timing his hit on the returner. On top of it, he launched himself into the returner's head.

Your "argument" is ridiculous. Its like saying Charles Martin's hit on Jim McMahon was a penalty, but not a cheap shot. Martin just mistimed his hit on McMahon after McMahon threw the ball downfield.

The return man should have the field awareness and peripheral vision ability to know he has someone in front of him, about to hit him.

I do not make 6 figures to play football, but when I look up in the air I can still see about 15 yards in front of me using my peripheral vision.

So, the hit was the cover mans fault, it deserved the penalty and the ejection, not the fine and suspension. The return man is at fault for not paying attention to his surroundings. He could have moved.

Again, your argument pins the blame on the return man, and you don't really give any reason for why it shouldn't have been a fine and suspension.

Your first argument is a joke. Basically, you wanted the return man to avoid the hit, yet there is no way that the return man could have anticipated the hit. What you are saying is that whenever a cover guy is near the return man on a punt, the return man should flee the area and not make an attempt to catch the punt. You've got to be kidding me.

Your second point (not really an argument) about the fine and suspension is also a joke. Not only was the hit poorly timed, the cover guy launched his body into the returner's head/neck area. He wasn't trying to dislodge the ball (especially since the ball was still 30 feet above the returner's head), he was trying to injure. That is the only explanation.

I don't know what you mean by he squatted. He clearly left his feet. As far as running away from the hit I'm almost positive that he wasn't expecting the guy to launch himself at him before the ball even got there since it is against the rules. I honestly believe he still made out lime a fat rat. Should have been a harsher suspension.

The word defenseless is overused in the NFL...but it just so happens one of 2-3 only situations where a player is truly defenseless is on Punt returns. Apparently this guy wants PR men to be pre-cogs and Jesus rolled into one . Not only keeping there eye strictly on the ball , but anticipate the hit thats coming from guys hes not seeing , and judge whats in there heart to see if a malicious hit is coming so they can jump out of the way and dodge it.

Also wanting the guy to move out of the way is to avoid a hit is bitchmade. That is the point of fair catch. If the D catches up to the ball or in this case beats it then you call fair catch so you can field the ball and hold field position. Moving out the way gives the chance of losing the field position.
